Twitch Film is reporting that 17-year-old pop singer Saki Fukuda has been selected to play the main female lead, Ai-chan, opposite Shō Sakurai's Gan-chan, in the live-action feature film version of Yatterman that is currently in production.
Fukuda's prior credits include performing the theme song for a television drama based on the volleyball manga Attack No. 1, as well as as a role in the live-action version of the manga Life. She is also starring in the 2008 remake of Sakura no Sono (The Cherry Orchard), based on Akimi Yoshida's eponymous manga. The original movie was released in 1990, the same year that Fukuda was born.
Yatterman, a take on the classic 1977 anime series that is being directed by Takashi Miike is currently on track for a Spring 2009 release.
