Thai Maid Cafe Shuts Down

"Akiba" closes in the wake of police investigation and arrests
The "Akiba" maid cafe in Bangkok's Siam Square, the self-proclaimed "first maid cafe in Southeast Asia", closed its doors permanently on September 16. The cafe opened in April 2006 and was staffed primarily by female students from nearby Chulalongkorn University.
Police investigated the shop in July due to complaints that minors were frequenting the cafe and viewing manga with adult content. As a result, two managers of the cafe were arrested on charges of exposing minors to obscene manga. In the wake of the arrests, the number of customers visiting the shop declined sharply, causing the shop to go out of business permanently.
