Legend of Kamui's 2009 Live-Action Movie to Begin Filming

Chosun reported that Korean-Japanese director Yōichi Sai (Choi Yang-il in Korean) will make the first live-action film based on Kamui Gaiden, the 1965-67 and 1982-87 side stories to the original 1964-71 Legend of Kamui ninja manga. The director is best known for 2004's Chi to Hone (Blood and Bones) historical film, for which he won two Japanese Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note movies' L, NANA's Shinichi) will star in the title role, and Kankurō Kudō (Ping Pong, Ikebukuro West Gate Park) will write the screenplay. Shooting will takes place between this November and next February for an 2009 release. Sanpei Shirato's manga was previously made into a 1969 anime television series and 1971 movie, and Viz released the manga in English.
