Major Movie and CD Rental Chain to being renting out Manga this April
Major Japanese rental chain Tsutaya, operated by the Culture Convenience Club company, has announced that they will begin renting out manga to customers. The chain, which has outlets in most major Japanese cities, currently rents movies, CDs, CD singles, and other offerings that vary based on the store.
Initially, manga rental will be available at 100 Tsutaya stores. Each store will stock about 30,000 volumes of manga, with the potential for more as the program expands. If manga rental is a success, there is a chance that manga rental will become available at all 1300 Tsutaya stores in Japan.
While Manga rental shops are not a rarity in Japan, the entry of a major national chain like Tsutaya is likely to have a significant impact on the market. Manga publishing houses could be impacted by a decrease in actual sales of manga volumes. However, if manga rental turns a profit, manga rental could become another significant source of income for publishers.
