Excerpts from Press Release:
Between August 15th and December 16th, TOKYOPOP sponsored The Rising Stars of Manga Competition, seeking to find the best new American creators of manga. This challenge invited aspiring artists to submit between 15 to 25 pages of their original stories in English for the chance to receive monetary prizes and their story published in a TOKYOPOP® anthology, entitled THE RISING STARS OF MANGA, scheduled for publication on April 29, 2003.
TOKYOPOP® received thousands of entries from people all across the country, and is pleased to announce the following winners:
Priscilla Hamby (Age 20) and Clint Bickham (Age 21) from Houston, Texas are the Grand Prize winning team for their work, Devil's Candy. They will receive $2,500, trophies, and the extraordinary opportunity to pitch their full-length manga series to TOKYOPOP's top executives. Priscilla, who created all of the artwork, says she tried to "design characters that were immediately striking, likable, or funny despite their sometimes grotesque appearances." Clint, the writer, says he "wanted to make something that felt familiar, but had not been done before."
Michael Schwark (Age 27) from Fairview Park, Ohio and Ron R. Kaulfersch (Age 27) from North Royalton, Ohio, the First Place winning team for their work, Van Von Hunter: Circlet of Necromancy, will receive $1,000 and exquisite trophies.
The following runners-up will each receive $500 and an honorary plaque:
Runner Up - The Little Match Girl by Hans Tseng (Age 17) from Orange, California
Runner Up - Sitting Ducks by Ben Seto (Age 23) from Hayward, California
