Gerald R. Molen, producer of Schindler's List, buys live-action film rights.
The perennial master thief Lupin III is now set to become a major Hollywood motion picture. Gerald R. Molen, producer of Schindler's List, has acquired the live-action film rights to the character.
Much of the structure of the film is still being determined. The five main characters -- Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, Detective Zenigata, and Goemon -- will be present in the Hollywood adaptation, but little else has yet been developed.
According to an Associated Press story, Monkey Punch does not want to get involved in the film's production, provided the five main characters are present.
Meanwhile, Molen confirmed with the Daily Yomiuri that some changes may be necessary. "We don't want to...go against the integrity of Lupin III and what it is understood to be, especially in this country ... There may be some creative license that we may have to take to make the story work." he said.
