Joe Hisaishi's Ghibli Music Featured in University Challenge

The opening episode of the new season of the BBC's quiz series University Challenge, broadcast on Monday August 29 and available on the BBC iPlayer, saw the students of Durham University correctly identify a piece of Joe Hisaishi's music from Hayao Miyazaki's film Spirited Away (pictured). Host Jeremy Paxman then asked the Durham students to identify three more pieces that Hisaishi had written for Miyazaki's films, but they could only get one right. The relevant section starts at the 14-minute mark in the programme.
In 2021, University Challenge included a question on Neon Genesis Evangelion, and "hentai" was memorably used by a contestant to win a round of Countdown in 2019. Also in 2019, Anime Encyclopedia co-author Jonathan Clements appeared on Christmas University Challenge, as one of a team of alumni from the University of Leeds.
