Ghibli Referenced on British Eastenders Soap Opera

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Two characters in the series mention their love for Totoro and Ponyo

The soap opera Eastenders has been running on the BBC since 1985, with more than 6,500 episodes broadcast to date - roughly six-and-a-half One Piece total marathons. So perhaps this moment was inevitable. The following "casual Ghibli references" were spotted by graphic designer Karan Bhardwaj, who posted a video extract of the relevant moment on Twitter.

When we break into the conversation between a man and a woman, they're talking about characters who don't live at Albert Square...

"No way! Yeah, I love Totoro, he's so cute." "What about Ponyo? When she gets her little chicken feet..." "I so wanted a magic fish when I was little!"

The episode was broadcast on Thursday May 27, and can be seen on BBC iPlayer here.
