Akira Construction Wall Mural Ends With Largest Panels Yet

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The giant Akira construction mural around the PARCO department store has steadily changed since 2017. Now in the midst of the manga and film's place in time, the third and final part of the mural will be unveiled on February 28. The final collage walls will be the largest yet.

Akira creator Katsuhiro Ōtomo and collage artist Kosuke Kawamura worked together on the multi-year piece. The current art can be enjoyed until the latest mural goes up. The third piece will remain in Shibuya until early summer.

Akira has left a lasting impression on pop-culture across the world. References have appeared in music videos, Hollywood films, and the anime is forever immortalized in space. Tokyo has looked to the series for inspiration for some of the preparations for the 2020 Olympic Games. The NHK program Tokyo Reborn remodeled Tokyo for the year 2020 while taking notes from Akira to create an eye-popping, futuristic city.
