KFC Japan Personifies New Sandwich as Fantasy Characters

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Japan loves KFC. From celebrity endorsements to wild promotional giveaways, the country's chicken lovers are always ready for new ways to support the fast-food chain. They now have something new to celebrate because a bun-less chicken sandwich is making its triumphant return.

A promotional video and website debuted to honor The Double sandwich on Monday. The sandwich has two fried chicken filets instead of buns. Nestled in between the chicken buns is bacon, cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce, and mustard relish. A similar sandwich known as the Chicken Filet Double first appeared in Japan in 2012.

For the promotional campaign, a great war between good and evil forces happened 1,000 years ago (i.e. in 2012). The Double and its Five Elementals, called the Meat Pentagon (the aspects of The Double), appeared through the Demon's Gate. They were soon sealed away again, and the Years of Silence followed.

The Meat Pentagon are the characters that appear in the video: Lord of Flame (voiced by Jun Fukuyama), Burning Phoenix (voiced by Fukuyama), Paladin of Sauce (voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka), Cheddar Lucifer (voiced by Sumire Uesaka), and Time Executor (voiced by Fukuyama). The video and website describe the sandwich's return with a fantasy story but also explain the meaning behind the tale in parentheses. The story's Absolute Mana, "the secrets of The Double's deliciousness," are its cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce, mustard relish, and fried chicken.

The Double will invade KFC restaurants throughout Japan on November 1.
