Owlboy Creator Makes Trailer for Chrono Trigger Game's Unreleased Sequel

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Pixel artist and Owlboy game creator Simon Stafsnes Andersen recently created a trailer for the hypothetical Chrono Break game that Square Enix never released. He posted the video, which features music by Jonathan Geer, on Sunday.

Andersen said he spent about two months to create the video. He explained, "I had already known for years I wanted to explore a hypothetical sequel to Chrono Trigger, Cross and Radical Dreamers, but it took me a full year until I figured out how I wanted it to look." Although the teased sequel will most likely never be released, Andersen said, " If the sequel that was planned years ago was revived, this is likely how I would do it."

Andersen released Owlboy for Windows PCs in 2016, and then for MacOS and Linux in 2017. The game's Nintendo Switch version launched this past February, followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases in April.

Trademarks for Chrono Break were filed in 2001, but the game was never officially announced as in production. Various Square Enix staff members referenced the game over the years, but in the end, it was cancelled and never released.

The classic 1995 fantasy game Chrono Trigger features character designs by Dragon Ball manga creator Akira Toriyama. Chrono Trigger launched for the Nintendo DS in 2008 and smart devices in 2011. The game launched for PC via Steam in February.

The original game inspired the Radical Dreamers: Nusumenai Hōseki spinoff in 1996 and the Chrono Cross sequel in 1999. The game also inspired an original video anime in 1996.
