New Gundam Breaker Game Panned in Japan, N. America

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Bandai Namco Entertainment's New Gundam Breaker game is launching to largely dismal reviews on both sides of the Pacific. The game launched worldwide on Friday (Thursday in Japan) for the PlayStation 4 and is panned across Amazon Japan and Amazon.com.

The game isn't suffering from a few cases of buyer's remorse. Almost 90% of the reviews on Amazon Japan gave the game just one star, while Amazon.com reviews are slightly more favorable--77% of the reviews on that site are also a single star.

Players cite changes from Gundam Breaker 3 as a major downgrade, as well as poor controls, dating simulation functions, lack of customization, and generally slow loading and fighting as major issues.

The game is the latest installment in the Gundam Breaker series and uses Unreal Engine 4.

The Gundam Breaker series allows players to take various real-life Gundam model kits and use parts from the kits to create their personalized mobile suit. Previous versions included a co-op mode, although players say New Gundam Breaker only offers co-op in three-versus-three battles and not for story mode.

Bandai Namco Entertainment released the first game for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in October 2013, followed by Gundam Breaker 2 for PS3 and PS Vita in December 2014. The Gundam Breaker 3 game shipped for the PS4 and PS Vita in Japan in March 2016, and the game received an English release in Southeast Asia in April 2016.

Disclosure: Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Bandai Namco Holdings Inc., is a non-controlling, minority shareholder in Anime News Network Inc.
