Dead or Alive 6 Tones Down Characters' Sexuality

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Dead or Alive 6 producer and director Yohei Shimbori revealed in an interview with IGN's Esra Krabbe that the sexy fighting game franchise is toning down some of its fanservice elements in the latest installment. The choice is a big move for a game brand that already includes spin-offs like Dead or Alive Xtreme series featuring its female cast playing sports in a variety of bathing suits, pole-dancing mini-games, and virtually sniff characters on the beach.

"We wanted to make a more cool and mature Dead or Alive this time, and to that end we made a conscious decision to make the characters less sexualized," Shimbori told IGN. He added that both the female and male characters are still good-looking, but the development team prioritized characters' design as fighters first. It seems the game is looking at function over fashion this time around. Gone are the bouncing, exaggerated breasts and over-the-top costumes.

The change-up is one of a few planned for Dead or Alive 6. Shimbori also revealed that physical damage will be visible on female characters, like cuts and bruises, something that was absent in previous series entries.

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja will release the fighting game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam in early 2019.
