Persona 5's Yusuke Tries Potato Snack Acting Challenge in Video

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The United States is currently going through the unfortunate and dangerous Tide Pod Challenge trend. Fortunately, Japan doesn't seem to be suffering the same fate. Nevertheless, various challenges and memes go through waves of popularity in Japan, much like in many other countries. Persona 5's Yusuke recently performed the "Jagarico Acting Ability Interview" challenge with the help of Futaba. Atlus posted a video of his attempt on Sunday.

Jagarico is Calbee's popular potato stick snack that comes in a variety of flavors such as cheese, salad, or limited-edition varieties. The "Jagarico Acting Ability Interview" dates back to at least 2015 and involves saying "Jagarico" to the beat of music as a type of acting challenge. The person attempting the challenge replies to prompts about how to perform the word, and they must say the word within the proper number of beats without hesitation. Many people in Japan have posted their attempts on social media.

Atlus' video celebrates Yusuke's birthday, January 28. In the video, Futaba begins by coercing Yusuke to participate in the challenge. Yusuke wants nothing to do with Futaba's whims at first. Because she knows Yusuke's weakness for Jagarico, she promises to give him some if he participates. Enticed, he agrees to participate if Futaba gives him a dozen large, salad-flavored Jagarico packs for free.

Futaba then proceeds to tell him various ways to perform "Jagarico" such as happy, sad, lonely, angry, while fighting, cold, hungry, while eating, sleepy, while confessing love, and in various accents. Yusuke passes the test, and Futaba congratulates him. She wishes him a happy birthday and says everyone is preparing a party for him. Yusuke then thanks everyone and says he thinks his next year will be good.

Atlus' Persona 5 role-playing game shipped for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2016. The game shipped in North America last year after a delay. A-1 Pictures' is producing a television anime series adaptation that will premiere in April.
