Classic Gegege no Kitarō Conjures Up Some Cash in Bingo 5 Ads

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Shigeru Mizuki's Gegege no Kitarō is a spirit that just won't quit. The classic manga has inspired over a dozen anime adaptations since it debuted in 1959. The characters' popularity has led to multiple collaborations, including a mobile game, but gambling might be a first for the franchise.

The Bingo 5 lottery game "hired" Kitarō and his supernatural friends for a series of ads. In the first ad, Kitarō asks his dad, Medama-oyaji, about Bingo 5. He then follows up the question with another, wondering how his dad can talk when he's only an eyeball and doesn't have a mouth.

in the second ad, Kitarō, Sunakake Babaa, Konaki Jijii, and Medama-oyaji try to figure out how to play Bingo 5. Sunakake Babaa's sand attack proves unhelpful.

The ads reunite voice actors Keiko Toda (Kitarō 1985-1988) and Hiroko Emori (Sunakake Baba 1985-1988). Bin Shimada voices Medama-oyaji in the ads but is signed on to voice Konaki Jijii and Nurikabe in this year's anime adaptation of the series. He previously voiced Medama-oyaji in the Kitarō crossover in the Yo-kai Watch Shadowside: Oni-ō no Fukkatsu movie last year and has also voiced Kawamura in the 1996 film Gegege no Kitarō: Daikaijū, a werewolf in Gegege no Kitarō: Yōkai Tokkyū! Maboroshi no Kisha, as well as Chi and various characters in the 2007 version of Gegege no Kitarō.

The newest Gegege no Kitarō anime will premiere in April with Miyuki Sawashiro in the lead role.
