Dragon Quest Writer's Hometown Unveils Metal Slime Statue

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The Dragon Quest franchise's 30th anniversary has brought all kinds of tie-in goods, from laptops to chewing gum. The city of Sumoto on Awaji Island in Hyōgo prefecture created something far more permanent to remember the video game series and its ubiquitous slime enemy.

On Sunday, a metal statue of the slime, alongside the Sword and Shield of Erdrick, was erected in the Sumoto Civic Plaza Square in front of Yuji Horii, a video game designer and the scenario writer behind the Dragon Quest series. Sumoto city is Horii's home town.

A Dragon Quest exhibition is taking place in the nearby exhibition hall. The exhibit is the "selections" version of the previous Dragon Quest Museum that previously took place in Tokyo and Osaka and garnered over 200,000 visitors. Displays include a 1/1-scale replica of Erdrick's armor, large dioramas of settings from the games, and development materials by Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Kōichi Sugiyama.
