Acclaimed manga artist Leiji Matsumoto is inspiring a series of ukiyo-e prints based on his works. The "Leiji Matsumoto Ukiyo-e Collection" will include prints from Galaxy Express 999, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Space Battleship Yamato.
Living Japanese national treasure Ichibei Iwano created the paper for the prints using traditional techniques, as he previously did for The Ghost in the Shell and Lupin the 3rd ukiyo-e prints. Calligrapher Fūka Ryo is also participating in the project.
A total of six images will get 1,000 prints each, all including Matsumoto's signature. The prints range in price from 95,000 yen to 100,000 yen (US$832-875).
Anime ukiyo-e prints have become increasingly popular. Tokyo Otaku Mode localized the Lupin the 3rd prints and Pazzy Entertainment brought over The Ghost in the Shell prints. Dragon Ball Z and the rock band KISS have also been subjects.
