Professor Oak Also Gets "Regional Form" in Pokemon Sun & Moon

posted on by Eric Stimson
Actually a cousin

Among the innovations that the upcoming 3DS games Pokemon Sun and Moon will bring to the Pokemon series are regional forms, versions of Pokemon that evolved differently from their regular forms on the island environment of Alola. It appears that Professor Oak will also get his own regional form.

This new character is currently known as Professor Nariya Orchid (Orchid being Professor Oak's name in Japan), and he's studying Pokemon's regional forms on Alola. No, it's not the familiar Oak from the original game with a serious suntan; it's his cousin. The English localization is confirming it too, and naming the character Samson Oak. This is a play on the original Professor Oak's full name: Samuel Oak.

To honor Nariya Orchid, @george_10g, a cappuccino artist at Cafe Reissue in Harajuku, Tokyo, tweeted this "cappuccino art" of the professor.

Nariya Orchid also appears in a new trailer for Pokemon Sun and Moon. Look for him at 1:31, very briefly.

Nariya Orchid's dark complexion has caught Japanese fans by surprise. He is not the first professor in Pokemon Sun and Moon to attract online attention: Professor Kukui quickly acquired a fanbase for eschewing a shirt underneath his lab coat.

Pokemon Sun and Moon will be released in Japan and North America on November 18 and in Europe on November 23.
