Ghost in the Shell Realize Project to Hold Awards Ceremony

posted on by Eric Stimson
Symposium, project exhibition also planned

The Ghost in the Shell Realize Project was launched in November 2014 to explore and further develop emerging technologies like optic camouflage, substitutional reality and human-like robots with the goal of pushing the world closer to the one we see in the Ghost in the Shell series. A "hackathon" was held in October and November to bring together Japan's brightest minds and develop projects that deal with the themes of cyborgs, computerized brains, and cities. Now an award ceremony will be held to honor the best work in these fields.

The Ghost in the Shell Realize Project the Award will go to one of 10 teams. The event will also include an exhibition of the teams' projects and a symposium bringing together professors, Kenji Kamiyama (the director of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), and Tow Ubukata (writer of Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie) to discuss the latest technology and the Ghost in the Shell anime. Symposia have previously been held in this project, but this will be the largest one yet with ten speakers. Attendees who want to dive deeper into the technology being discussed (somatosensory media, wearables, artificial intelligence, etc.) can check out the Ghost in the Shell University before the symposium, which is a five-lecture series by most of the professors involved in the symposium.

Crowdfunding to support the Ghost in the Shell Realize Project is underway at the Green Funding Lab, which has raised 534,000 yen out of a 2,029,000 yen goal ($4,534 out of $17,228). The award ceremony will be held on February 11 on the 9th floor of the Shibuya Hikarie tower in Tokyo. Previous aspects of the project have included a 3-D model of Motoko Kusanagi based on a gravure idol and race queen.
