Unofficial Smash Bros. Mod 'Project M' Ends After 5 Years

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Borne out of desire to add more technical variety to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, 'Project M' was an unofficial mod released and continually tweaked over the course of five years. After the release of its latest version, the official website updated to announce that the development team disbanded to work on new projects.

Many of Project M's improvements were based on gameplay from the previous Super Smash Bros. Melee game to rebalance characters, create faster gameplay, and more move variation. The development team also introduced new stages, characters, audio, and costumes.

These adjustments were unofficial but the creators make no mention of whether development was halted at the request of Nintendo. The official page no longer includes download links to the mod. The previous Project M 3.0 version was downloaded over 300,000 times and praised by Wired and Kotaku as the "The Best Super Smash Bros.."
