On April 7, registration for the domain name .tokyo opened for trademark holders. To help publicize the event, Tokyo's new governor, Yōichi Masuzoe, held a press conference in the luxury Park Hyatt Hotel in Shinjuku with members of the idol group AKB48, since they have done much to promote the Tokyo district of Akihabara. Anna Iriyama, Haruka Shimazaki, Yuki Kashiwagi, Mayu Watanabe, Minami Takahashi, Haruna Kojima, Yui Yokoyama and Mako Kojima represented the group.

Until June 6, registration will only be open to trademark holders. Then, from June 9 to July 18, "advance" registration occurs for high-value addresses. General registration begins on July 22. If there's a conflict between multiple registries with the same address, an auction will be held to determine the registrant.
Tokyo is the fourth city in the world to create its own Internet domain, following Vienna, Austria; Berlin, Germany; and Nagoya, Japan. Governor Masuzoe said at the conference, "Today marks the launch of .tokyo, the first new geographic domain representing a Japanese prefecture. Six years from now the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games will be held in Tokyo. I look forward to seeing .tokyo showcasing the best of Tokyo and helping us to become the number one city in the world."
