Nintendo Originally Asked to Make Pikachu Buff

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently revealed that its cute Pokémon mascot was almost a lot beefier. The company was originally advised to redesign Pikachu if they hoped to sell its monster-catching Pokémon games.

"This cute yellow thing is not a monster, everyone told us," said Iwata. The design team went back and drew buffer versions of Pikachu but former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi put his foot down on keeping Pikachu cute.

"When you adapt too much, you lose what's unique about you," Iwata said.
