Anime Fashion Inspiration: Free!

Kyoto Animation's Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club anime introduced audiences to five well-sculpted athletes with even more memorable personalities. This edition of Anime Fashion Inspiration looks at each character's appeal as a jumping point for fun outfits that should suit any fangirl. The stoic Haruka is all about comfort and how easily clothing can be removed when confronted with a swimming opportunity. That interest in stylish comfort is the main focus of the "Haruka" outfit with a few cheeky nods. The blue t-shirt has the phrase "I'm really a mermaid" and emulates a sea-shell bra. The "Haruka" outfit is for a minimalist, comfort junky who wants functional pieces.



Makoto is a sweetheart and his corresponding outfit is classic and cute. There are obvious references to the character's interests reflected in the cat totebag, pearl cat-ear headband (cute and classy!), and goldfish print dress. The "Makoto" outfit is a blend of girlish sensibilities but enough maturity to be taken seriously. He is the team captain, after all.



Nagisa is all play, so let's save the work for later! The outfit combines "boyish" pieces with a sense of fun, as seen in the velvet shorts, suspenders and matching Panama-hat. The flip-top combat boots and knee-high socks also give the outfit enough edge to keep it out of cavity-inducing territory. The "Nagisa" outfit is one to be worn out on day-adventure and is perfect for playing hookie.



Rei is a beauty that cannot be contained by convention. Deep-down, under the weight of all the "rules," Rei is looking to emerge as a free-spirited butterfly! That energy is reflected in this set's Butterfly Print stretch jersey dress. Stretch jersey is awesome because the versatility of the fabric makes it comfortable and the dress itself is simple enough it can be dressed up or down very easily. Paired with flowery, open-toed heels, a big sun hat (the floppier the better), and some feathery fake lashes and you'll be a real boho butterfly.



Where would the group dynamic be without its resident bad boy, Rin? Rin's sharp teeth are just one indicator of ferocious competitive streak. The "Rin" outfit also mirrors that toughness, meshing together a tiger print dress, fanged heels, and nylons that might actually injure someone. For the most dedicated Rin fangirls, the half head-shave style would nicely complete this tough girl look.
