Gamblers, Don't Forget the Akagi Sake
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
While mahjong tables aren't a hot gambling spot on the strip, that didn't stop Nobuyuki Fukumoto's Akagi manga from ranking as a best-seller in Japan. The manga and its anime tie-in has inspired game and drinking-related merchandise, some even selling out.
Its most recent incarnation is a set of five sake bottles with pictures of the series' characters on the labels. The bottles come in five varieties: "Ginjō Akagi," "Junmaiginjō Akagi," "Honjōzō Washizu," "Daiginjō Washizu," amd "Kichozō Sake Hero." Ginjō, Junmaigjinō, Honjōzō, and Daiginjō are all varieties of sake. The entire set retails for 6,000 yen (~US$60). If you want to really complete the set, the site is also selling a separate pair of Akagi sake cups for 2,381 yen (~US$24).
As of late, some sake manufacturers have turned to anime and video games to make their products more appealing to a younger demographic. The Nobunaga's Ambition video game got some pricey, high-class sake and anohana also got an alcoholic tie-in back in 2011. Tomu Sake created its own Moe-shuu or "Moe-sake" blend last year.
