Cop Injures Man While Drifting, Cites Anime and Video Games as Inspiration

posted on by Sarah Nelkin

A 22-year-old male police officer from Fukuoka Prefecture collided his vehicle into another car while “drifting," and the man in the other car was injured as a result. The officer was punished by being suspended from his post for three months on October 10. The officer told reporters:

I wanted to try drifting after seeing it in anime and games, and I've done it a few times in the past. I never thought I would cause an accident.

The officer was on his way home after finishing work at his police box on June 23. According to the police's announcement, at about 12:10 a.m., the officer began driving his vehicle at twice the 40-kilometers-per-hour (about 25-miles-per-hour) speed limit of the mountain road and drifted, crashing into a 29-year-old man's vehicle. The victim received a cervical vertebrae sprain that will last for at least 20 days.
