posted on by Egan Loo
The Japanese production company Toei launched a website to announce that its live-action Hikōnin Sentai Akibaranger (Unofficial Sentai Akihabara Rangers) television series will premiere this April. The story follows three protagonists who live in Akihabara's Electric Town among other otaku. When the trio learn that a malevolent entity plans to annihilate their neighborhood, they become warriors to wipe out evil — with the help of super gear created by a beautiful and brilliant genius.
The website lists several live-action special-effects (tokusatsu) and anime veterans, including director Ryuta Tazaki (Kamen Rider), director/character designer Keiichi Satou (Karas, Tiger & Bunny), writer Naruhisa Arakawa (Kamen Rider Kuuga, Spice and Wolf, Steel Angel Kurumi), and composer Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, Eden of the East).

Update: Toei had already revealed that Tokumei Sentai Gobusters, the 36th entry in the official Super Sentai franchise, will premiere on February 26 in Japan. The tentatively titled Super Hero Taisen (Super Hero War) film will also open this spring with about 200 heroes from both the Super Sentai franchise and the Kamen Rider franchise.
