Hakuōki Adorns This Year's Hino Shinsengumi Festival Poster

Anime helps spread word of delayed event that celebrates famed shogunate force

The Hakuōki television anime will help spread the word about this year's Hino Shinsengumi Festival by appearing on posters before the November 12-13 event. Located west of downtown Tokyo, Hino is a city whose major claim to fame is being the birthplace of Hijikata Toshizō, Inoue Genzaburō, and other members of the Shinsengumi police force of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Throngs of Shinsengumi aficionados comes to Hino every year to celebrate the legacy that has been retold in novels, manga, anime, and game — including Idea Factory's original Hakuōki Shinsengumi Kitan game. One highlight of the festival is a parade of marchers dressed in full Shinsengumi gear.

The festival is usually held during the second weekend of May, to coincide with Hijikata's May 11 birthdate. However, this year's festivities were delayed to November due to the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster.

The Hakuōki Shinsengumi Kitan game recounts the Shinsengumi story as a romance adventure game for female players. The first anime series based on the game aired last spring, and the second television series, Hakuōki Hekketsu-roku, premiered last October. Aksys Games announced at Anime Expo this year that it will release the first Hakuōki game in North America.
