Deadline Site: Micronauts Film Project Hires Zombieland Writers
posted on by Egan Loo
The Deadline movie news website reported on Monday that J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures hired Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to script the proposed film adaptation of Hasbro's Micromauts action figure line. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company's Bryan Burk are producing the project with Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner and Hasbro's Bennett Schneir.
The defunct Mego Corporation sold the Micronauts toys from 1976 to 1980. Micronauts were actually rebranded Microman action figures from the Japanese toy company Takara (now a part of Takara Tomy). In Japan, Takara relaunched the brand in 1998 as Microman Magne Powers, and the new version spawned the 1999 Chiisana Kyojin Microman anime series (pictured right). Two other Microman toy spinoffs from Takara — the transforming handheld objects from the Micro Change line and the transforming vehicles from the Diaclone line — were rebranded and exported as the first year's lineup of Hasbro's Transformers toys in 1984.
After the success of Zombieland, Wernick and Reese were asked to write film scripts for Paramount and Hasbro's G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation, Fox and Marvel's Deadpool, and Disney's Cowboy Ninja Viking.
