Kyoto Animation Sells K-ON! Anime Cel Trading Cards
posted on by Egan Loo
The studio Kyoto Animation began selling its first K-ON! Kyo-Ani Trading Cards, which feature miniaturized versions of anime cels. 30 of the cards will be replica pencil drawings, transparent cels, and backgrounds, so collectors can assemble them to recreate famous scenes from the anime. The set also includes 12 different miniaturized storyboard packs, each with about 60 pages of art — enough for half a segment from an episode. 16 different illustrated cards with shiny holograms round out the set.
Each 7,000-yen (about US$91) box comes with 20 packs, and each pack comes with either six scene cards (replica pencil drawings, cels, backgrounds), six illustrated cards, or a storyboard pack. The contents of each pack will even be sealed in a replica of the manilla envelopes that anime studios use to ferry drawings and cels around.
Ironically, Kyoto Animation and many other anime studios have not used actual cels since the turn of the century, and now assemble their artwork digitally.
