Dragon Quest's 1st Art Exhibit to Be Held in Tokyo
posted on by Egan Loo
The first art exhibition dedicated to Square Enix's Dragon Quest role-playing game franchise will open on October 8 at Tokyo's Roppongi no Mori Arts Center. "Tanjō 25 Shūnen Kinen ~Dragon Quest Ten~ Yūsha no Sū Dake Bōken ga Aru" celebrates the games' 25th anniversary this year.
The first Dragon Quest game, Japan's first "real" role-playing game, shipped for Nintendo's Famicom console in May of 1986. The franchise's popularity exploded with the franchise's third entry in 1988, and there are now nine games in the main series (as well as several spinoffs).
Although the contents of exhibition have not been revealed yet, it is expected to showcase the games' original rules and walkthrough maps, production materials personally written by the "father" of Dragon Quest Yuji Horii, and the original character design sketches by Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball). The music by composer Kōichi Sugiyama is also expected to be featured.
Not coincidentally, Tokyo's Roppongi district has also been hosting Luida's Bar (pictured left), the real-life recreation of the drinking pub from the games, since last year. The Roppongi no Mori Arts Center exhibition will have an on-site, pop-up Luida's Bar branch for a limited time.
Square Enix will reissue the first three Dragon Quest games in a collection (pictured above) for the Nintendo Wii console on September 15 in Japan. The indie anime studio Kamikaze Douga is animating a new opening sequence for this collection.
