Doraemon's 1st Airport 'Theme Park' Opens Friday
posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
The New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido built the first Doraemon airport "theme park" as part of a new extension to its domestic terminal. The "Doraemon Waku Waku Sky Park" comprises 1,200 square meters (about 13,000 square feet) of space in the new area.
The park includes a shop, a cafe, a library, a workshop, an entertainment area, a commemorative photo area where fans can "ride" on the time machine featured in the show, and a playground. Admission to the paid area of the park costs 600 yen (about US$7.60) for adults, 400 yen (about US$5.00) for middle and high school students, and 300 yen (about US$3.80) for elementary school students. Children under 3 are free.
The new extension will officially open on Friday. Construction was supposed to be completed in June, but due to a shortage of materials after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster of March 11, the deadline was pushed back a month and a half.
