The Garden of Sinners (movie series)

Based on a dōjin novel of the same name, Kara no Kyoukai was the creation of a small dōjin group known as Takebōki. Wirtten by Kinoku Nasu with illustrations by Takashi Takeuchi, the two founders of the dōjin circle Type-Moon. The first publication of the novel was at Comiket 61 under Type-Moon.

Kara no Kyoukai is often referred to as the spiritual prototype to Type-Moon's first release, Tsukihime. Aside from significantly notable similarities such as the protagonist's names are both Shiki, Mikiya Kokutō's character design and personality was used as the basis for Tsukihime's protagonist Shiki Tohno. Kenichi Suzumura does the voices for both Shiki Tohno in the Tsukihime anime and Mikiya Kokutō in Kara no Kyoukai.

Tōko Aozaki is the older sister of Aoko Aozaki, the magician who gives Shiki Tohno his glasses at the beginning of Tsukihime. In the Tsukihime game, Aoko indicates that she stole the glasses from her older sister. In later chapters of the Kara no Kyoukai novel, Tōko indicated that Shiki Ryōgi had become skilled enough with her Mystic Eyes that she didn't need her glasses anymore, hinting that the glasses that Aoko gave Shiki Tohno possibly belonged to Shiki Ryōgi.

Azaka Kokutō was the prototype for Akiha Tohno in Tsukihime. Both girls are uptight, snobby, have brother complexes, and an uncanny distaste for their brother's choice of company. In Type-Moon's Plus Period Artbook, Azaka Kokutō is the spitting image of Akiha Tohno except that Akiha has a significantly flatter chest.

Jouji Nakata is often considered the archetypical voice of the Type Moon villain by Type Moon fans and properly so. He has played the role of NRVNQSR Chaos in all renditions of Tsukihime, with the exception of the anime; he was Kirei Kotomine in Fate/Stay Night, and the only member of the original Kara no Kyoukai drama CD cast to reprise his role as Souren Araya for the movie. Kinoko Nasu even quotes people from ufotable as saying, "Jouji is best for Araya. Araya is best for Jouji."

In the second movie, when Kokutō is out with Shiki on their "date," the two cat plushies that they win from the UFO catcher is an allusion to Len and her white counterpart from the Tsukihime universe. As Len is mostly passive in nature, White Len represents the opposite with a very active and aggressive personality which is portrayed by the opposing look on their faces. Both Len and White Len can change from human into cat form where they wear a black and white bow around their necks, respectively.

In the claymation-esque "public service" segment at the start of the first movie, the film that Kokutou and Shiki are watching stars Neco-Arc (a character from the Tsukihime franchise who is essentially a parody of Arcueid Brunestud).

In the claymation-esque "public service" segment at the start of the second movie, Neco-Arc from the Tsukihime franchise takes a seat behind Kokutou and Shiki. They then watch a film that stars the self-mocking caricature representation of Kara no Kyoukai creator Kinoko Nasu.

In the 5th movie-part, at about 56:50, there is a painting on the wall of a gate. That is the gate to Hell in Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, chapter 1 Dante's Inferno.

Movie 5 makes clear allusions to Alex De Large, the villain of Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" in the foppishly dressed evil mage Alba. He even openly sings "Bethoven's 9th Symphony 4th movement", Alex's favourite song, when committing horrific acts of torture and murder. Not so coincidentally, Mikiya himself has also sung "Singin' In The Rain", the song Alex gleefully sung when raping a writer's helpless wife, twice in the series now.

The yellow coat that is used by Shiki in the first movie is the same coat that Saber from Fate/stay night used in episode 3(both of them is created by type-moon)
