Godzilla Screenwriter Max Borenstein Returns for Sequel
posted on by Rachel Mahoney
The website Deadline reported last Thursday that Max Borenstein will write the screenplay for Legendary Pictures' Godzilla sequel film, which Gareth Edwards will direct. Both Borenstein and Edwards worked on Legendary's first Godzilla film as screenwriter and director, respectively. Borentstein indicated during last Wednesday's recording of a future podcast for "The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith" that he is collaborating with Edwards on potential sequel ideas.
The film is set to premiere on June 8, 2018. Mary Parent will work with Legendary to produce the film, and Alex Garcia will oversee the project.
Edwards' first Godzilla film opened in the United States in May and earned over US$500 million worldwide. Legendary president and chief creative officer Jon Jashni told Variety in May, “Our initial goal was to re-brand and re-establish the property in a Tiffany way. Now, we're trying to take in all of the results of [opening] weekend.”
Edwards is currently working on one of Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars films, which is slated to premiere on December 16, 2016. He is expected to direct the Godzilla sequel after his work on the unnamed Star Wars film concludes.
This year's Godzilla film premiered in Japan on July 25. Bandai Namco is producing a Godzilla PlayStation 3 game slated for release in Japan in this winter.
