posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
ICv2's Milton Griepp and Comichron's John Jackson Miller estimated that the comic and graphic novel market reached US$870 million in the United States and Canada last year. According to their analysis, the market is split among three major groups: comic store orders of individual issues ("floppies" or "pamphlets"), graphic novels, and digital comics. Graphic novels sold US$415 million, comic books sold US$365 million, and digital sales were US$90 million.
The majority of comics and graphic novel sales took place in comic book shops (US$340 million for comics, US$170 million for graphic novels), followed by online, independent, and chain book stores including Amazon and Barnes & Noble (US$245 million). About US$25 million worth of comics were sold at newsstands.
The estimates do not include comics and graphic novels sold to libraries, print subscriptions, collectible back issue sales, and pay-wall website subscriptions.
