They only had one of those, but it sold out fast. But TezukaPro didn't want to put out more, because they're still butt-hurt about the Lion King thing.

From what I read, I don't see Jungle Emperor as a stretch goal. They had some of the manga in certain pledge tiers, but I can't see it as a stretch goal.
I wondering why they don't make a campaign for Jungle Taitei. That'd get funded so fast. |

I guess this was too obscure for most people. Heck, Osamu Tezuka in general is too obscure for most people when it's not Astro Boy, or to a lesser extent Black Jack, Phoenix, and Buddha.

They've gone to the well too many times with Kickstarter. It's supposed to be a platform for getting a project off the ground, not a business strategy for financing everything they do.

Oh, they've done it repeatedly? That explains everything then. I've witnessed Farsight Studios, an indie game company, repeatedly turn to Kickstarter with diminishing returns.
Too many people view crowdfunding as a way to easily get capital for projects without thinking from the investors' point of view: If the company has to do crowdfunding again after a short time, where did the money they invest go? |

I really don't get why there were using kickstarter for 1 volume book stories or 2 volumes.
Is that really that big of a risk to release something so short? I think if it was just used it for a longer series like Rainbow Parakeet or Three Eyed One then maybe it makes sense. |

DMP also runs the Junè brand as well and they release BL manga. There is quite a bit of resentment among these readers that they have yet to run another yaoi Kickstarter while there have been a couple Tezuka Kickstarters in the interim. Obviously, Tezuka has more widespread appeal, but when your last yaoi KS was in February and there's been several Tezuka KS since then, it's easy to understand why many of these BL readers are ignoring the Tezuka campaign.

I'm a bit sadden to see that the Kickstarter didn't make it. I've backed all the Tezuka Kickstarters (including this one).
I do think they are taking a risk releasing these books. Tezuka maybe well known among anime fans but most fans would take one look at the art and toss it away. There is a small group of Tezuka fans who are basically backing all of these. But would that be enough people to publish enough books to put out in book stores? Probably, not. Though I do think they are doing the Kickstarters to frequently. This is the 4th one this year. And we still don't have the books from the first one this year (I know they went through some issues with the cover). But I'm waiting for three sets of books and they want me to buy a 4th set? |

GATSU, from what I understand and have , Tezuka Pro. wasn't pissed.
From p. 45 of the reprinted edition of '08's "Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the US.", A Tezuka Pro. worker said that it wouldn't be worth it because Tezuka is a small, weak company while the Disney lawyer are among the world's top 20. |

It was very sad this highly respected title did not get funded. I am sure Tezuka's art turns off many younger manga fans, but thankfully those manga fans mature and begin to discover better quality manga. The reality is Tezuka is a highly niche market and only thanks to Kickstarter can we see a legal translation and printing of hopefully his entire body of work. I would love a manga investor to step forward, be a patron of the arts and help quickly see some more Tezuka printed. Sadly it seems things are more difficult DMP no longer distributes new Teuzka manga to other outlets, like comic book stores or amazon. Akadot, their retail store or Kickstarter campaigns are the only source for these new books.
As to the yaoi fanbase I am sure DMP is trying to figure out which titles to reprint or new series to pick up. Though DMP pulled back on their yaoi print in 2014, it seems they have been able to continue some series in 2015. |

I didn't back it because I backed the Storm Fairy campaign and want to see what kind of a book I get out of that. My experience with their Juné side hasn't been very positive, so I'm hesitant to support more projects before I've got the reward from the previous one. Plus, I've supported several video game campaigns that ended up failing and never delivering anything to the backers, so I'm always a bit hesitant now.

This really stinks. I wanted the Wonder 3 manga ever since I saw that pilot episode but, I didn't like how you had to pay nearly $120 for the printed editions since that's all I wanted. Perhaps DMP needs to take a break from these Kickstarters or do some form of event for Tezuka so more people can be aware of the God of Manga besides the already niche fanbase.

DMP has delivered on every Kickstarter they completed. Some are still getting made or about to ship, but they've yet to not release something. I got my Ludwig B volumes a few months ago and they were great.
All three volumes of Wonder 3 together were only $70 for the lowest tier to get them all physically. Not sure how you got $120. |

That pretty much sums up my feelings, too. There are just too many of them in a short space of time. Two a year would be reasonable, but four is really pushing it. I wonder if the goal would have been appreciably less if they went for a paperback edition instead of hardcover? |
