But then I got to a scene where the company president is discussing how often they get asked for animated porn by their customers. The owner laments that he just can't make it work. As it turns out, the major obstacle to such a business is actually the credit card processing companies! Most of them have varying levels of comfort with different types of adult content, but all of them completely draw the line at tentacles ("it's bestiality") and rape. And that covers pretty much 95% of the adult anime ever made.

I had no idea. Well, this does explain a lot. Thanks, Justin.

I wonder if this means there's a big, untapped source of revenue if a card processing company decides to put its disgust with the animated stuff off to the side and dive straight in to the world of hentai?

As for the question of dubbing songs, except where having to know what they're singing figure into the plot (eg. Usagi and Naru rehearsing their talent act, Lina Inverse having to perform the ancient Idol spell), the idea of dubbing songs pretty much ENDED a few volumes into Viz's first Ranma 1/2 OAV dubs, when asking English VA's to play their respective roles singing the DoCo themes turned out to be not in their job description.
Even if you weren't an early fan blowing gaskets over Trish Ledoux's attempt to translate the lyrics in tempo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F0TLy97CdI

And taking that to the level of Love Live idols?...Umm, no. Shocked
Although with a more song/singer/music-company based series, it's more likely to be song rights getting too messy.

Sending them a quick tweet of praise from overseas could very well make their day. Just, do it in Japanese, and don't necessarily expect a response.

I have tweeted to several Japanese anime musicians, some of whom are voice actors as well (usually in simple English or very basic Japanese) and had pleasant feedback from several of them. A relevant picture included with the tweet is good also.

A similar avenue to reach artists is through their management - often a twitter account listed as "name-of-artist staff".

95% of hentai anime being rape and tentacles is a BIG exaggeration there. I can hardly find the latter anymore in recent releases. Still, what's stopping these companies from venturing into paypal or the infamous bitcoin? The porn industry is known to test the waters of unconventional methods to bring about their smut.

Yes, in my opinion, trying to switch out a well renowned group like μ's for relatively unknown (I'm saying this quite liberally since they tend to be outside the USA/Canada) VA's is quite the disservice. Not like it really matters in the grand scheme of things since the main demographic who is interested in Idol anime are inclined more to original JP audio with subs than dubs. I assume dub fans would just have to live with the dissonance.

As for delays in anime, nothing else than Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku would usurp it as the king of procrastination in recent years. By around halfway through, they treated it like it was a biweekly show for 12 episodes. Everyone involved in the project must've had a rough time working on this to put it nicely. For what it's worth, they weren't desperate enough to put out recaps of an SOL anime. Rolling Eyes

The answer about dubbed songs is what I had expected, unfortunately.
But this just makes me even more curious about how it is done when it is done.

Such as Wendee Lee singing two complete songs in the "Live Alive" episode of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Not only does she do a great job with the vocals but the translator did a great job with the lyrics. As far as I can tell they are faithful to the original and they actually work well as song lyrics. It cannot be easy to do that.
To me that is the best performance episode that I have ever seen. I actually cannot decide if I like the original songs or the dubbed songs better.

I really would like to get more dubbed songs, but I have accepted that it is not likely to happen.

A good percentage of hentai is NTR though and it turns me (and a lot of the hentai fanbase) off a lot. I don't mind the tentacles and other types of monsters though. As for why bitcoin isn't used, it's due to the lack of knowledge of bitcoin in Japan, heck you still have people who don't know of bitcoin in the states despite places accepting bitcoin. Paypal wouldn't be as practical because while you can buy adult BDs/DVDs, you can't use it to buy digital adult media which would cut off an avenue of distribution.

I never expect songs to be dubbed, and generally I am okay with it. I can't imagine it's a simple process, and for something that's as music heavy as Love Live!, I won't say it's a poor decision.

That said, I do think that dubbed songs are interesting. Has to be a much more trying process than translating dialogue.

Though they've pretty much given up dubbing opening and ending themes, FUNimation still dubs insert songs pretty regularly, with varying levels of success. Most recently I can think of the Index movie where, despite Megan Shipman trying her hardest, the songs came out sounding rather flat.

On the other hand, I actually think the dubbed songs in BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad sound *better* than their Japanese counterparts.

Funimation used to do a lot of song dubs, even for inserts, which baffled me as to why they'd bother (I vaguely remember, I think, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles having some dubbed inserts - all I can remember is someone infiltrating a castle to an English insert song, so it might've been another series). Other times they'd just have the insert music with no singer at all on the English track, which was even stranger. They also did a lot of English OPs (DBZ, One Piece).

But they did a great job with Nerima Daikon and Beck (I preferred the English Beck tracks over the Japanese, and still love the English Money songs the best), but then, those weren't originally designed to sell CDs. Smile

(Looks like Spaceman beat me to most of what I had to say.)

The cuckold fetish, which encompasses NTR, usually falls along the "normal" scale amongst regular people. Cheating apparently is a less deviant act than say Monsters inseminating girls. Non hentai enthusiasts are for the most part are okay with it so I don't really see this as a real stumbling block to the people who will pay the streaming product let alone CC companies.

Well, you gotta start somewhere. Betamax and VHS were still in its baby steps until the porn industry boosted them up to the medium standards back then.

Yeah, that's one thing I don't really get about Paypal. You can buy the physical product, but when it comes to online adult services it becomes an big no-no. Quite puzzling.

That was actually done by ADV before they went out of business, but yeah, that's another good example of well done dubbed songs.

Indeed, I think there's been more parodies of tentacle scenes in mainstream/all-ages anime over the last 10 years than there have been actual "super tentacle hentai porn." A fair bit of recent hentai isn't straight-up rape either, and if processors insisted on everything being 100% consensual, a lot of live-action/3D porn would be excluded as well. If anything, I would've thought the underage content in hentai would've been more of an obstacle.

Incidentally, there was one song left in Japanese near the end of that where the vid-notes basically said, "this song was on the Music&Effects audio track, so we couldn't dub it." I imagine that could be the case for songs in other anime as well.

Quote:
For a very music-oriented show like Love Live! or AKB0048, it's simply a non-starter. Why? Because one of the main reasons shows like this get made are to promote idols and voice actors. The singers' agencies and record labels are often on the production committees, and they're putting money into the show because they want to promote their singers and sell their music.
And in the case of AKB0048, not letting Sentai translate insert songs on their discs was a brilliant stroke in international marketing and promoting understanding.

With credit card companies and Bitcoin, it also matters that the current US Administration has cracked down quite a bit on payment proccesors and banks (and shippers, as FedEx has been sued) doing business with customers engaging in illegal activities, on the grounds that they should know their customers. The Department of Justice and the Treasury even had some fact sheets of the types of businesses often correlated with shady activities, and included porn along with things like coin dealers, payday loans, gun dealers, and so forth. A number of live action porn actors have had trouble maintaining bank accounts as a result, some people losing accounts they had for years.

While the "Operation Choke Point" is often exaggerated, it does have a bit of a chilling effect. If a payment processor isn't allowed to hide behind ignorance but can be liable for its customers actions, then many will turn away businesses on the official government high risk list rather than expose itself. Better to lose a few customers than a massive judgement. Some hentai is viewed as obscene or child porn by some US Attorneys, so it's a risk. That's far from the only factor, of course.

Unfortunately we are not getting that recent hentai in any form here in the US.
A streaming site would be limited to the same older hentai that has had a physical release.
I guess that it is possible for somebody to license and stream the censored hentai that is released in Japan, but I doubt that it would sell here.

I've seen shows that were scheduled to run 26 episodes, and then fail to make air around episode 12 or 13. They end up having to air a recap in its place. With one less episode in which to tell the story, the writers then had to frantically rewrite the remaining episodes, so an entire story would still fit within the allotted time left. Sometimes that's not possible, particularly if the failure occurred near the end of the run.

If the production can afford to finish the show, sometimes the remaining episodes are released later as "accidental" OAVs.

I don't watch enough anime to know how often it's been done before, but Girls und Panzer did things differently.

Due to various issues during production, there was a "recap" episode slotted in between episodes five and six, and again after episode ten. They apparently had only purchased time for twelve episodes in the fall 2012 season, finishing in December. I vaguely (and incorrectly?) seem to recall that before they went with the second recap (ep 10.5), episode twelve was going to air immediately after eleven, or perhaps squeezed in the following week. That didn't happen.

I guess that the production company bought more time later, since the final two episodes ended up airing in the second half of March, between the winter and spring seasons. That was a long wait to see the two sisters compete in the final Ooarai vs Black Forest battle...
