The series does at least excel in its English dub; in fact, this is one of the better recent Funimation efforts

I completely agree! I haven't enjoyed a new Funimation dub this much in a while.

Definitely one of their best in 2011! Very Happy

Chris Bevins has a pretty good track record as an ADR Director.

I know some people like to cr*p all over ecchi/fanservice shows but this show didn't even have any nudity (IIRC).

Some risqué scenes and a lot of perverted humor but it was actually pretty tame compared to other fanservice shows IMO.

I think even uptight people could crack a few smiles & laughs and even like this show if they gave it a chance.

most of us probably have seen the show at some point
what I would like to know is what extras are missing from the funimation release, if any, that were included on the japanese release.

also, since this is an upscale how does it look compared to the DVD? I'm sure it looks good though, all of the previous bluray upscales have been excellent

baka and test packaging was excellent, I bet this doesnt disappoint too.

I have not picked it up yet, still deciding.

Hey, guys!

I'm a long-time ann reader, but I've gotta say... fudge YOU!!! The humor in this series is great, and a huge step up from most crappy "comedy" anime series. You guys have very poor taste when it comes to comedy. I highly suggest that all anime bros, invest in this series, or at least stream / download, and buy the box set once you appreciate the glory of PANTY ROBO!

Cheers

I'm a fan service lover and highly accepting of dumb, silly humour but HLP tried my patience. There were definitely some great bits spoiler[(Flying Panties - Instant Klassic)] but I found Ikaros too bland and uninteresting. At least she has a great set. But what really drove me nuts was the insane over-use of Tomoki's chibi form. I like chibi when it's used properly, but there were some episodes where Tomoki is in chibi form more than his actual form. It didn't help that I absolutely hated the sound of his voice when in chibi form. It is possible listening to the dub would take care of that objection. Anyway, yeah, I'll probably pick this title up when it goes to its S.A.V.E edition and is on sale.

I thought this series was hilarious. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who doesn't like busty harem shows, but if you don't mind that, it's a riot. I thought the English dub was excellent, with Greg Ayres in prime comedic form.

Both I and Blood- do generally like "busty harem shows" but we both ultimately had tepid responses to this one. In fact, I actually found it to be a chore to watch most of the time.

Cool story, bro.

Here's the problem though; if you immediately start to hate and spew nonsense towards everyone who doesn't agree with you 100% you're going to live a lonely life. Remember that the rules themselves state that you are expected to at least be respectful to staff and to other users, whether you're disagreeing or not.

This haven't watched this series, but whenever I read at any depth about it, it just seems pretty distasteful to me. The way it treats the master and servant relationships seems especially repellent. Which feels rather a shame since it has such a lovely title. It sounds like this should've been an Noshituki ABe joint or summat.

Well, I loathe them, so I'll stay the Hell away. I'll admit to being almost tempted by the English dub. I have a fondness for Jamie Marchi's voice. Perhaps I'll watch the sample episodes presently available on Hulu just to hear it and to double-check my dismissal.

I guess I must not be an, "anime bro," then. Why does that feel so life-affirming?

Eh, I found this one easy to watch compared to others I've seen.

Naturally, not every show is meant for everyone, but there generally is a show for everyone.

I'm actually going to lend my support to the "Wait, did this show actually make me chuckle? How did that happen?" crowd. I'm still not sure how that happened, but it did.

My personal favorite was when spoiler[Tomoki pranked the whole damn school with "My Tinglynips", which was a "HAHA OH GOD WHY?" moment of excellence... that thankfully didn't last very long. Talk about comedy that hurts.]

Granted, it's no Hidamari Sketch or Fruits Basket... or even Ninja Nonsense in the humor department, but it's better than I initially gave it credit for.

Well, to me this anime is quite enjoyable and funny, but what the best thing this anime has is not fan-service in my opinion, but the ending songs for each episode which differ from episode to episode, and it kinda becomes a trend in other anime series (I think). Not only that, the earlier mentioned ED songs are also those nostalgic Japanese songs from the late 70's and early 80's; I guess no-one would recognize them, especially when you are too young to know about these old/classic Japanese songs. I would give out bonus points for these ED songs alone.

Your out of luck because this one is going straight to the top as Funimation's Anime Classic line up.

Wow, I have to say I don't agree with this review at all.

I am in no way a fan of most over-the-top fanservice shows, but the first series of Sora no Otoshimono completely betrayed my expectations in the best way possible. In a genre dominated by indecisive and bland protagonists, I found Tomoki's character to be, while not necessarily original, at least refreshing. The remaining characters were also set up as perfect foils for each other. I think one of the things that initially hooked me was how Ikaros would invariably comply with all of Tomoki's perverted wishes, despite obviously filling the role of the "main romantic interest" character. It's not something you usually see.

I also thought most of the humor was surprisingly tasteful, and many of the scenarios fairly original. Ultimately it comes down to whether you think exploding, flying panties are funny (personally, I find them hilarious), but I think Sora no Otoshimono offers something in this regard that similar shows do not, while at the same time sacrificing overly explicit and tasteless fanservice. The more serious plot is filled with cliches, but there were a few scenes that made me truly hate the antagonists, so I can't say it was ineffective or boring.

I also thought the soundtrack was very good. It's one of the few I've listened to on its own. The opening theme remains an all-time favorite of mine, and a few of the ending themes were catchy too. I was extremely surprised by the quality of the music in this show.

Sora no Otoshimono isn't an exceptional anime at all, but I feel it needs defending because it definitely isn't bad. I would honestly, without hesitation, recommend this show to anyone. Not only is it a fun watch, but the effort put into it clearly shows. It certainly even surpasses the original manga.

I agree with you for the most part Ailis, but I don't think a C+ is a terrible score, and I'm not sure how much higher I would actually put it.

Now the text of the review was a little more critical, but I don't think he was unfair. He concentrated on the portions that I think many people would shy away from the series on and if you are reading a review as a preview of a series that's not such a bad thing, especially because (if you are like me anyway) you are going to look at the comments and see if the people following the review are generally positive or negative on it.

In any case, I think this is one of my favorite fanservice series. I think the plot is actually interesting despite the regular distractions and SD usage in the series. It's certainly an odd mix of things that works for some but understandably doesn't for others.
