there is no denying it, that is irie-kun and kotoko-chan from itazura na kiss, they didn't even try to make it look different, the others are very close but it looks like a kid drew them,

either way, they need to license stuff like that, I hope they get sued

Well, they got rid of the manga scanlations, now it looks like they're resorting to different avenues.

I'm hungarian, and someone just posted this on a hungarian animesite not so long time ago. I was surprised, but noone really cares about these things here, so they won't get sued. Heck, there are even TV shows that uses Code Geass, Bleach and Naruto soundtracks too, but noone gives a crap about them, since they've been doing it for ~2 years by now.

Edit: Oh, and it's not only the website and the catalog, they even appear in the posters hanged out in the supermarket.

Either the ad company is really brave or really, really stupid. Copyright lawsuits are a pretty big deal. Hope they like court rooms and expensive lawyers.

Besides, the knock offs are horribly drawn. If your going to knock off a image without changing anything, at least put effort in doing so.

Two images, probably traced, appearing in a catalog to a public which probably doesn't even have access to the series, being reported on for look-alike characters gracing a catalog serving a population so tiny, it won't even matter.

Well, let's just get a C-130, load it with nukes, fly over to Hungary, and remove the country from the face of the planet over this heinous act of copyright infringement. How dare those bastards try to profit... uh... no.

Goodness, such a ridiculous waste of time to even report this.

Let alone comment on it.

That is really interesting! My first impression is someone should do something. I mean it's taken this long for something serious to be done about scanlations... and I think that just shows how out of control something can get if you choose to ignore it.

But secondly, I wonder if there is a fanbase for anime in Hungary? Are they choosing to rip off these character designs to appeal to people or are there alternatively little to no fans there and so they suspect no one will notice? I am unfamiliar with anime's presence in Europe.

More than anything, I can't imagine why they'd choose that frowny-face Irie picture. It's not really appealing to have an angry-looking young man on your supermarket flyer, is it?

There is a fanbase, but certainly not as big as in the USA. I think they suspect noone will notice, but I don't really know. There was another case - completely unrelated to that - where it got out that the official translator of Soth Park used the fansubs that was made by another person, and he wasn't caught for a long time, even tough SP has a quite big fanbase here. There are "brave" people who like to get paid for no work. I think this was the case here too, the company paid a certain person to make the designs, and he just copy-pasted the characters from the series, and the higher-ups didn't know it wasn't their own work.

And as to why they chose these characters... well, this is an ad for the school-starting, and they are wearing school uniforms (not like that there is any school in Hungary where we have to wear unifroms), and that was propably the only reason.

Wow, talk about some bad Adobe Illustrator traces.

Though this Bush ad campaign from 2004 is still my favorite "we ripped off anime without even trying" thing.

Interesting, the fanbase in Hungary was big enough to get Animax. Also I'm kinda disturbed from what you told me about South Park translators used fansubs to translate the series. I feel sorry for your country illegally ripping off anime character and make it their own in catalogs and in places and nobody complain about it.
