Interesting article. Whenever I read about stuff of this sort, I immediately think of Rozen Maiden. Especially when the scenes take place in that store where the dolls are made and displayed for sale.
Now if I can only overcome this fear of them coming to life and coming after me with a paring knife... And speaking of dollfies, I remember seeing a Yoko (from Gurren Lagann) dollfie that looked pretty darn amazing. I totally agree that the work put into these dolls are impressive. It's interesting to me- I first took notice of BJDs in maybe... 2002/2003-ish. I was more into the original Volks Dollfie line, which were Barbie-sized dolls with blank heads that faces (eyes and all) had to be completely painted on to. The Super Dollfies came later and somehow the hobby didn't take off until those showed up, but I always preferred the regular dollfies. Maybe it was the 2D, anime-style lover in me, cause those dolls were way more anime-esque than the more realistic SDs.
Ah, I wanted to find a link to this one amazing Japanese dollfie artist, but I'm at work and can't find it. Poop. |

I don't own any kind of dollfies, but I have a couple of 27cm 1/6 scale Obitsu dolls in my possession.

Very interesting stuff... A world I'm not very familiar with but thanks to articles like this it gives us "outsiders" a look behind the curtain. Some of the doll designs are outright creepy & it goes without saying that creepy dolls have shown up in many anime - Vampire Princess Miyu, Hell Girl, Tactics, Petite Cossette & Rozen Maiden are ones that come to mind immediately...
I wonder if the idea of the Gynoids from GitS2 came from these types of dolls? I can appreciate the work that these folks do, it seems very time consuming - I don't think I'd ever have that kind of patience (nor artistic ability of any kind) to pull it off myself. While trying to find a custom doll for my daughter of a Sailor Moon character they never made a Bandai/Irwin doll for I came across the website for Setsuna Kou http://www.setsunakou.com & they do some pretty incredible work (I hope you/they don't mind me giving them a plug). Not exactly on the same level as what Aravist does, eyes are painted on, but good nonetheless & the outfits are great. |

I never expect to see an article on Ball Jointed dolls here on ANN. I'm a huge fan and collector myself (currently at around 12 BJDs). I'd say there are a decent number of male collectors (by no means do they outnumber female collectors). My boyfriend is also a collector of BJDs and owns two himself. I would definitely suggest to those more interested in dolls with the anime aesthetic should check out Volks Dollfie Dream line (International). This line has had several character dolls released from series such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Ikki Tousen, Fate/Stay Night, Evangelion, and Gurren Lagann to name a few. I own an Escalayer DD and will be getting the Yoko DD, they are definitely worth the price. This BBC video also has some good information on BJDs as well as the collectors themselves.

I think they look cool. I wouldn't go out in public with one, but they have a certain something about them. I guess it's like people who collect anime figurines..

Freaky dolls are freaky!
And I think that one has it's "O" face on ... heh heh heh Did I hear correctly that these dolls are "anatomically correct"? |

Most of those are limited edition so they're already sold out You can always try Y!J auctions. When they're available they can be found at the international and usa/canada website.
Edit: You're also not too far from the physical store. Their usa website has the address.I would check with them because the physical stock can be different from the website stock. Also they can give you more information/ you can check out a dollfie dream in person. |

I.... WANT... this one!!!! The best out of all of them. I find it interesting the BJD concept is being applied to the PVC line. Many of figma/Max Factory characters now feature this. In looking at just the base prices of stuff, though, I fainted at the cost. Hell, I think $100 is pushing the bounds of a 6" figure, but $1000s? Oh, if only. Of course, if anyone needs a gift idea for me, the link above will be more than sufficient. |
