YU SUZUKI DEPARTS SEGA, SHENMUE'S FUTURE GOES WITH HIM
Since a lot of the news above deals with Sega, here's one thing I forgot to mention last week: Yu Suzuki, creator of Virtua Fighter and many other classic Sega titles, retired from the company as far as game development goes. He'll still oversee some operations at Sega, but this means that Suzuki's unfinished Shenmue series is likely to stay that way.

Finally! I'm gonna miss you, Suzuki-san! You made the best game series ever, even though people were too stupid to appreciate it, because it didn't have car-jacking.

Perhaps their Astro Boy game was completed years earlier and just sat around until 1988,

Sounds more like a desperate attempt to cash in on Rockman. Anyway, thanks for the coverage. Any chance you can go into that Phoenix game next?

Hmm....I'm not some hardcore fan of final fantasy, only haven gotten fullly involved with it through my first game, FFVI (which I loved, for GBA), within the past year or two. I haven't played any others, with lack of PS2 and all... though no one needs to think of lecturing me over FF or gawk at me; I know a good amount, even about what's been released so far about XII-- it's just I haven't played much, that's all. Anyway...is the demo mainly just turn-based gameplay? Or a fun combination of solid gameplay and cutscene(s)? If so, guess I can spare some time for it...

One thing about Madworld: isn't the higher difficulty setting supposed to be so ridiculous that you can easily die from just a few hits? Though I personally don't think I'll ever play it due to personal tastes, I still kinda feel like defending it... guess I just don't want to see it fail in the long run and keep other developers from putting out solid efforts for the Wii, that's all.

Darn, so the only good Astro Boy game is still Astro Boy: Omega Factor? Of which yes, I am in that cult, it was my gateway to Osamu Tezuka.

Speaking of Astro Boy: Omega Factor, I've been considering trying out the Bleach DS games on the basis that the developers are awesome. So long as Treasure is also making this one, they might just get my support (in the form of US currency).

Man eff any Bleach game Sega puts out on the DS since the first one. Bleach DS 2nd was garbage and this RPG generated about as much excitement as Elmer's Glue Pasta Sauce. Bleach DS4th MIGHT be amusing, the same way Soul Carnival was, but until they make another 2D fighter, nuts to the franchise.

You didn't mention the Game Boy's 20th birthday. April 21, 1989.

Gunpei Yokoi, rest in peace.

And Mr. Suzuki, finish. Shenmue. Games, novels, whatever. I don't care how you do it, but tell us the rest of the story.

Please, seriously... Do it for me... (I love you)

The treatment of Senko no Ronde in America constantly angers me. I suppose the main problem is this labeling of a mech fighting game. It really isn't; it's first and foremost a bullet hell shooter not unlike Triggerheart Exelica or Ikaruga.

The difference is that, yes, you're in an arena fighting another character, both in mechs, but really, people never seemed able to understand how to play the game effectively because they're just running in for melee attacks all the time and foolishly wading through intricate layers of bullets, then complaining that the game's broken after the fact that they just died before even touching you.

Honestly, I wonder how far these people have progressed in the game; the final boss characters in particular are a pretty hefty challenge.

This really was a game that 1) Needed a lot more advertising, or at least a website to explain more about it, and 2) Needed a budget price from the get-go so stores wouldn't feel a need to boot down the price. It's like it's appealing to a niche within a niche, but for some reason it got some public exposure and ended up with a bad rep.

And here I thought Senko no Ronde was an excellent game and I don't even like the Xbox 360. I think the problem is that they put it on a platform that most wouldn't even bother playing it especially among Americans. If they had put it for Sony I think more Japanese and even some more Americans would have played it. Heck I even still see Gamestop locations that still have it in stock for $10 that no one is buying.
But wow just wow a King of Fighters shooting game? Now I know I've seen everything. I would have prefer it to come to the Playstation Network but even so I still doubt I will ever purchase it.

Don't blame me, I bought Mad World. I kinda wish I hadn't though. Honestly, I think Mad World got more hype than it deserved. It only really stood out because of it's unique visual style and because it was a R rated, violent game on the Wii. I mean, if it had used a traditional look and been on 360/PS3 it probably would have been mostly ignored as a mediocre beat em up. Sure, it deserves some credit for it's aforementioned style. But the trouble is that style alone isn't really enough to make and enjoyable game if the actual gameplay is uber-repetitive.

If you're going to have a game where you must repeatedly fight through a mountain of enemies, you need to mix it up. Unfortunately, the enemies are all more or less identical in their behavior. You have a decent number of moves but not enough to keep things interesting long term. It doesn't help as well that the points system is sort of poor. It often doesn't seem to actually reward creativity all that much. It mostly just rewards comboing signs + tires + spikes which is another big problem. The the bulk of the available items are identical to either the sign, tire or tossable barrel/box. Hazards too may look different, but basically amount to something to throw enemies into to kill them. The weapons are also mostly the same. They look different but act all the same. Also, making you play though the entire level again each time you try to fight the boss is a highly questionable choice. It only serves to frustrate and worsen the repetitiveness of the rest of the game.

The list is always for "next week", considering games come out on Tuesdays and the column comes out on Wednesdays. DWG2 was in last weeks column.

Looking forward to seeing Mark of the Wolves played by a new generation. I first played it as an arcade ROM years ago, then later bought it for the Dreamcast (along with Last Blade 2 Anime catgrin ) which I still have, but might go for this one too.

Sega will finish Shenmue around the time they release the rest of Shining Force III in the US. (Yep, after all these years I'm still bitter. Give us a remake or compilation reissue already! Better yet bundle them with Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers, maybe Fighters Megamix, too. Smile )

Highly doubtful, since Astro has always more popular than Rockman in Japan (especially in 1988 when he only had two games to his name.)

Poor Senkou. Brilliant game, chronically misunderstood. Nobody even agrees on what it is (and I think it's Virtual On in 2D with some shooter elements, thanks). Then the home release: it was for 360, so the really diehard waps who won't touch a Glorious Nippon Videogame on a Filthy Foreigner Console didn't, and the release was relatively early in the system's life: by the time I had a 360 the game had already been sitting in the $20 bargain bin for months. Meanwhile, I show the game to my friends who love fighters and arcade-style shooters (but haven't bought into current-gen yet) and they wonder where the game has been all their lives. Senkou just never found its market here.

The best I can hope for is that the JP release of DUO is region-free, but there isn't a single Japanese developer willing to put out a 360 game like that.

Yeah, it really irks me that the Japanese are getting all these great shmups for X360, but we don't, since for some reason they're all region locked even though the western publishers don't seem to be interested. Oh well, at least there's XBLA and Raiden Fighters Aces (which better be released in Europe too! Mad )

As for Senko no Ronde, it was a decent game, but like others said it REALLY should have been either an XBLA or a budget title. Good to see that Sega at least had the sense to make Virtual On a digital title instead of retail.

Or make the game for every system to try and get it in the hands of fans who will appreciate the game.

Here's hoping that DUO somehow makes its way to other channels besides 360 (although I may breakdown one day and get a JP 360)
