Just a head's up, the year of Kurosawa's death changes from 1998 to 1988 in the second paragraph.

Whoa, that's one of my favorite Poe stories. This should be interesting.

Now if we could just get some Lovecraft interest raised in the anime world.....

The Mask of the Black Death is one of two theatrical projects that will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kurosawa's birth. The other project is a Hollywood remake of Rashōmon, the 1950 film that captured the attention of the world's film critics.

They were also supposed to be remaking Ikiru, but not for the anniversary.

BTW, Dersu Uzala is on R1 DVD. You should also mention Kurosawa's influence on Miyazaki and Kon.

Also Kurosawa never won an Oscar, he was nominated for Ran, but Sydney Pollack won that year. Ran did win the best costume award, but that certainly isn't credited to Kurosawa.

In any case, I'm pretty excited about this. It sounds like a great premise.

The article says he won an honorary Oscar and so does IMDB.

According to Wikipedia
When the first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929 to honor films released in 1927/28, there was no separate category for foreign language films. Between 1947 and 1955, the Academy presented Special/Honorary Awards to the best foreign language films released in the United States. These Awards, however, were not handed out on a regular basis (no Award was given in 1953), and were not competitive since there were no nominees but simply one winning film per year. For the 1956 (29th) Academy Awards, a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since then.

Hm, I stand corrected, the article said "Oscar" instead of "Honorary Award" in the first paragraph and I didn't make it down all the way to the last paragraph to make the correlation. Nowhere in the article did they mention the lifetime achievement award which I would have considered "oscar winning". I'm not trying to diss him, his work was great.

That would be something if they made Ikiru, that story really made me think about the problems that society can have at times. I think this is wonderful, even though he is dead, the script will still be made, as per the vision of Kurosawa. Sounds pretty interesting to say the least.

Kurosawa is my all-time favorite director, so I don't know what to think about this.

It's also worth noting that this isn't the first time a film was based on a script written by Kurosawa, posthumously: 2000's After The Rain was directed by Kurosawa's close friends based on a script he wrote in 1998.

Also, 2002's The Ocean Was Watching was based on Kurosawa's final script...well, "supposedly" final script, I should say

Yes, no dissing the great man but Lifetime Achivement awards are not considered wins. Only Oscars that are won competitively are officially recognized as such. This does not diminish the prestige of the award he did get - perhaps the most prestigious of all AMPAS awards.

For the record, Kurosawa has three Oscars to his name: an Honorary Foreign Language Film Award for Rashōmon (before the award was won competitively), a competitive Foreign Language Film Award for Dersu Uzala, and an Honorary Award for lifetime achievement. Regardless of others who might consider only competitive awards can be won, the academy itself recognizes honorary awards as wins.

Poe? check. Kurosawa? check. Anime? check

THat settles it. I'm watching this film. I would have prefered the House of Usher though. That's the scariest, for me, of all Poe's stories.

Please do not remake Roshomon Hollywood. I don't you guys are capable of doing a sucessful movie about the human condition without including it as part of action flick any longer.

For the record, Kurosawa has ZERO Oscars to his name because Foreign film Oscars are awarded to the countries that submit them and NOT their directors. Trust me, I know AMPAS ever-changing rules very well as I wrote for an Oscar prediction site (among other things).

There is a reason why his IMDb page says "Nominated for Oscar" and not "Won an Oscar".

P.S. You are reading that page wrong. When they say "Academy Award winner", they mean the film itself and not Kurasawa.

Sorry to break it to you but Hollywood already remade "Rashomon" a few times (albeit with significant plot changes) - "The Outrage" and "Iron Maze" among them. There were also films that were directly inspired by it, such as "Courage Under Fire" and "About Adam".

That's Kurosawa. Smile

Not zero — he still has the Honorary Award for lifetime achievement to his name. Regardless of whether he or Japan (or the USSR) earned the foreign film awards, he still has that Oscar to his name.

You are wrong on both counts. While the Academy Honorary Awards look like an Oscars (in most cases), they are not considered Oscar wins. It's an "Academy Honorary Award" not an "Oscar".

And no, he does not have those foreign film Oscars to his name - the countries do.

I really do find it quite amusing when people who don't know anything about AMPAs rules start to argue. Realize also that we are splitting hairs here: who cares what he won or didn't win - he was a great filmmaker regardless.
