Is it still cool to hate Kojima?

I just want to be sure I'm in the loop.

Disney+ and Kojima is a combination I never expected to see in the same sentence.

Probably depends why you hate him. There was people who hated him cause of things like Quiet and his treatment of women in his games before but now there's also people who hate him after Death Stranding and him not making a MGS-like game and going the Hollywood actor worship route.. I'm in the second camp myself while I defended him in the first Laughing Though 'hate' is a bit strong of a word, just kind of lost interest. I'm still waiting for Policenauts 2 tho

Yeah, it's still cool to hate him. There's people genuinely mad that Kojima was given the spotlight to talk about his upcoming game at The Game Award even though out of all the people who gave speeches you could name and get upset over Kojima should be the one that made the most sense since he's actually a game dev unlike all the celebrities and other guests.

(That being said the OD trailer was pretty bad and if the leaks are true then it's definitely not a game I'm interested in at all)

I'm in the "Kojima is still cool" camp. I'll check this documentary out.

I loved Death Stranding. Most other games these days are the same old open world or gaas stuff, so it was refreshing to have a nice laid back hiking delivery sim, and the story was great to boot for those who stayed through to the end. DS was truly something I can say I never expected or know I'd wanted or ever seen before. Just looking at the bulk of the typical game product trailers at this year's TGA put me to sleep.

Death Stranding does have it's drawbacks in that it's hard to recreate the same great formula of gameplay/story in open-world games that offer more freedom versus the tight but more controllable presentation of linear games like Metal Gear Solid. I also miss the codec and other stuff. And there are a few cinematics of tonal whiplash and scenes that don't work in DS which Kojima can be criticized for, but 90% of it was great. And it's amazing when you consider the fact that most of it takes place in a single room. DS is essentially an indie game masquerading as AAA, so from a design and logistical perspective, it's amazing how much Kojima wrung out of limited resources!

Personally, the greatest demonstration of cinematic presentation, real-time graphics, gameplay mechanics, story, and wide-linear sandbox level design was Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. And I do wish Kojima would return to that kind of style, which Phantom Pain lacked due to being open world + combined with internal issues within Konami that I highly suspect left it 'unfinished' in terms of creator vision. But Death Stranding was an amazing experience from start to finish, precisely because it does away with all that open-world game bloat.

And P.T. was an amazing little reveal, and I will always be sad he never got to try his hand at the Silent Hill franchise. As far as I'm concerned, Kojima has never steered wrong, with the exception of MGSV, which was a step back from Ground Zeroes. But I still played the crap out of MGSV, and it's gameplay mechanics have never been exceeded anywhere else for a 3rd person stealth action game.

If I were in Kojima's shoes, I'd do the same thing he is, enjoying his career working with people and artists he likes and admires. So it's really amusing seeing people all upset that he likes working with Western directors and celebrities. Would people be complaining about this if he worked with Japanese celebrities? Which he also does?

If I had my own multimedia game/movie studio and freedom to do things as the Big Boss, I'd also be working with my favorite movie/anime/manga/video-game directors, actors and artists, and people can feel free to criticize me for such innocuous things on the internet while I laugh all the way to the bank and tweet pictures of Christopher Nolan and Tatsuki Fujimoto signing my wall.

What about the leaks?

The title OD, relates to 'Overdose' which had leaked awhile back with conceptual demonstration behind closed doors intended to test real-time interactive cloud/streaming tech that was never intended for the public.

Basically, it seemed that Kojima, probably through Jade Raymond, was interested in doing something with Google Stadia, but Stadia fell apart. So it seems he pitched it to Microsoft, and because Microsoft is trying to push their cloud tech, it made sense to get Kojima on board.

Essentially, this project is not looking like it is intended to be a traditional console game. It will be fully cloud-streaming, and Kojima wants to attempt something only possible on that sort of platform where he can leverage processors far more powerful than the current consoles, which can even be played or interacted with by multiple users using phones/tablets.

I personally feel I won't want to play that either, but I am interested in seeing what he does with it. So it doesn't bother me. I don't game on phones, but I don't have anything against phone games, or Kojima making one, anymore than that he's making an Xbox exclusive, while I'm primarily a PlayStation guy. The same goes for cloud, and likewise for VR, which I think is cool and I always check out what's new on it, yet I don't have any plans to own one anytime soon.
