The English version of the song ranked #1 on Billboard Global Excl. U.S. survey (dated June 10).

Okay, here's something I didn't understand when this news came out. Was it actually the English version specifically? Or does the chart lump both the English and Japanese versions together? ANN reported it as the former, but following through to the Billboard story, what it says is…

YOASOBI’s “Idol” soars to No. 1, from No. 6, on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. survey (dated June 10). The song, originally sung in Japanese, hit the top 10 six weeks earlier and now becomes the duo’s first leader on the list following the May 26 release of its English-language version.

YOASOBI’s “Idol” vaults 6-1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, with 45.7 million streams (up 14%) and 24,000 sold (up 39%) outside the U.S. May 26-June 1. The song, originally sung in Japanese, hit the top 10 six weeks before and now marks the twosome’s first leader on the list following the May 26 release of its English-language version.

Given its initial version, “Idol” becomes the first song originally performed in Japanese to top the Global Excl. U.S. chart.

The track – the opening theme of the Japanese anime series Oshi no Ko – previously became the second Global Excl. U.S. top 10 for the Japanese duo of Ayase and Ikura, after “Yoru Ni Kakeru” hit No. 6 (amid an 87-week run on the ranking) in 2021. As previously reported, “Idol” has spent seven weeks running at No. 1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100.

Which doesn't look like it has the same implication to me. And the chart's entry for "Idol" lists it as having been on the chart for eight weeks, suggesting it's not just the English version that that entry refers to. I don't know anything about how Billboard does things, but I think this might've been misreported here.

K-Pop fan here. If a song is released in the U.S., it charts based on streams, radio play, and (now to a lesser extent) its physical sales. If a new version, remix, or physical edition is released, those sales count into the original release’s sales.

If IDOL got 75,000 streams this week, and the English version got 150,000, that would could as 250,000 total streams, as the English version gets coupled with the original.
