Uh, wow.

Not sure why this is being reported... is there a competition? Because I'm pretty sure "food" makes more money than love hotels OR anime. (Of course, with Japan, I could be dead wrong.)

I'm more worried that this study says that only 2% of Japanese get laid a night. Now THAT should scare you. Wink

Too much anime watching? lol Rolling Eyes

That actually would make me less inclined to want to ever visit a love hotel. You consider how often those beds are used, and you wonder how often those sheets are used, cleaned or not.

Someone should see if they could ever get a survey as to what percentage of the visitors are married, in a relationship, or just there for a fling.

I read that as soon as one couple is through with a room, the hotel patrons have to clean everything up, or else face heavy fines or possible shutdown.

Perhaps America should jump onboard with the love hotels Laughing.

I do remember hearing somewhere (I think it was from my professor when I was in Japan, but not entirely sure) that some salarymen check into Love Hotels on their business trips not for sexual escapades, but because they're a lot more comfortable than typical capsule hotels, so you might not have to do as much worrying about the bed sheets as you thought.

Also heard stories that for certain love hotel they don't allow 2 men only to check in.
So now the question for travellers is, do they allow 1 person to check in?

From what I remember, while I was living in Japan, some of my friends tried to stay in a love hotel on the way back from Mt. Fuji because they, in fact are more comfortable than capsules. However, one person can't check into a room alone. Furthermore, two men and one woman cannot check in as a group, but two women and a man can check in as a group.

How do you like them apples?

Judging from an episode of FMP, TSR, love hotels tend to be automated, so it would be very easy to check in alone.

Judging from an episode of Doujin Work, people can't get into love hotels alone.

Who knows.

I'm pretty sure those profit numbers are off by about an order of magnitude, at least on the anime side. Anime does not clear $17 billion in profit yearly in Japan. More like $2 billion in gross sales.

Is that more than Toyota made?
The BBC preogramme "Japanorama" had it explained by one of the owners of these hotels and he said it's all down to the way that most apartments are built with literally paper thin walls that are then not very sound proof also there will usually be other family menbers in the same apartment which is not what one would call an ideal situation that would allow the development of a romantic interlude. If it wasn't for these establishments Japans birth rate would be even lower than it is now. I guess guys never think about this when they go and buy sports cars with no back seat. That's why I had a Ford Escort van that I decked out as a passIon wagon. Boy do I miss those days now, so does the missus. Wink

Quite a few places I stayed depended on the number of people in the room, and a charge-by-person practice. I'd be really surprised if a love hotel allowed a single person to check into a room when they could make twice as much on two people, and that they would see three people in a room as highly profitable. I know that two people of the same sex (whether male or female) is rather frowned upon at love hotels.

In a related story (not completely off topic):

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20070829a3.html
http://www.forbes.com/2007/08/29/japan-netcafe-sleepovers-face-cx_vk_0829autofacescan01.html

This has also been reported by NHK. They said it was a viscious cycle, as people stay in internet cafes because they cannot afford an apartment, and they cannot get a full time job, as they have no place of residence to report on applications. But, what they can have at internet cafes is plenty of anime and manga. Perhaps a reason why they can't spend more on anime and manga (or for that matter, love hotels) is because they can barely afford a place to crash? Incidentally, you can have more than one person stay in a room at an internet cafe, but if you think the walls are paper thin in apartments, all you are looking at for walls in an internet cafe is basically a board, not really a wall.
