I remember a few months ago in Variety discussing this same issue, namely anime importation was expected to increase/remain the same as it became much easier for Netflix to fund a product or buy a license than commit to working on animation in-house.
Warner meanwhile, yeesh, that company is a mess. |

I think it is important to note that AMC's aquisitions of HIDIVE and Sentai could play an important role in the industry. In just a very short time HIDIVE has gone from streaming 4-5 shows to know 10+; they even managed to get the new Urusei Yatsura series. I imagine AMC will be very invested in anime for the ferseeable future.

The animation cuts by those companies did not have me too concerned about affects on anime. Licensing fees are likely going to cool off, and the offset of not owning it is that it tends to be cheaper than producing your own, so I could see Netflix decide that anime is the safer bet.
Notoriously, the powers that be at Cartoon Network/adult swim preferred content that the company owned and the result was less and less anime to the point where it was whittled to what we have now. The prospect of not having stuff produced for Toonami is disappointing, but the block was largely made up of things that you could watch elsewhere. My impression is that anime that was produced by adult swim was more of an acknowledgment that they needed stuff that was actually new. |

I have another theory for the upcoming season though: Bidding war for Chainsaw Man was so ridiculously fierce, the final cost burned Crunchy's wallet... hence their stepping back on licensing other shows.

Glad to see Answerman return, it was my favorite feature and in times past resulting in fascinating discussions in the forums.
And congratulations Frog-kun! ========= That being said, I can't find it in me to feel bad for the loss of almost-but-not-really-anime productions at Western companies. I'm not an animation fan, I'm an anime fan. The two are not the same. |

Just wanted to add to all the congrats to Frog-kun for running the current Answerman column! I wasn't reading ANN when the original contributor(s)? were around, but I remember reading Justin Sevakis' columns regularly and they were always such a great source (and fun to read as well). I'm sure you'll do great with the column as well, and looking forward to keeping up with it!

I know that the WBD has been cancelling various projects, including animation. Why might they cancel Animated Series A but not Series B? Only explanations that I can think is if there are/were some rights-related issues and if the WBD execs felt that Series A didn't do well enough for them but Series B did.

lmao nah. Chainsaw man clearly to be release on many streaming platform in JP(more than 20+ sercvice) since it's a Shonen series. just like Demon slayer,SxF Etc. since it's clearly not gonna be exclusive. Netflix probably not even interest with it because they only care about to make it to be Worldwide exclusive. not to mention CSM also license by Medialink for SEA,SA Region. Crunchyroll probably not even need to bid against anyone. maybe only HDIVE?? so i doubt it cost that much. |

Very glad to see someone has taken up the role of the Answerman again. Big shoes to fill for anyone who ever takes it on, but it's still a very welcomed tradition. Looking forward to more future entries.
