The anime's official website also just updated today with a collection of the various spells seen in the 13 episodes that will go up later this month. What's notable is that, should the subs on Netflix match what's seen on the website, almost all of the various spell names will keep their music references 100% intact (Accept, Damned, Venom, Sodom, Guns & Roses, Stryper, Anthem, Hellion, Exodus, Megadeath, Impelliteri, Dio, Rainbow, Thunder Riot, Accused, Def Leppard, Helloween), even if the original manga already had altered names, like "Guns & Roses" technically being written as "Ganzun-Roa" in the katakana.

It's been a good minute since I last picked up the Bastard manga or OVA, but I like what I'm seeing so far with this. Some of the CGI hits that uncanny valley where it doesn't look quite right in certain scenes, but that's about the only nitpick I have with the visuals. The vibes given by the trailer seem to be consistent with the tone I remember from the story, so as long as the pacing isn't too rushed I'm cautiously optimistic despite it being a Netflix title. If nothing else, that opening theme sounds pretty awesome.

Something I noticed, the Netflix trailer censors some of the more sexual shots from the Warner Bros Japan trailer.

Also they kept the “handsome protagonist” line from the manga, which has me hopeful this show knows the type of tone it’s aiming for.

Was a huge fan of the OVAs back in the day when they were a standing-room-only feature on Saturday nights at 'cons, and this new version looks satisfyingly sharp. Mightily looking forward to this, especially if the spell names do, indeed, remain intact.

This looks like some old school fun in the best way possible.

Loved this trailer with the... With all due respect... Face down. Callipygian up. coldrain don't miss. I hate that one scene that almost made me think it was a nipple at first glance.

Quite possibly the best choice in Coldrain to do the OP. Wouldn't have minded if they went with Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas either, but Coldrain is a great fit.

The sequence with THAT MAJOR SPELL, more than slightly hinted at in this trailer, was always the highlight of the OVA for me, but I can't get a read on its tone in this trailer at all with coldrain's (admittedly great) song playing over it. Tanaka Kouhei's insanely intense piano piece underscoring the climax of episode 5 (if not the entire show) lent so much impetus and tragedy to what until that point had really been mostly a mixture of over the top action, goofy lightweight ecchi and grim post/pre-apocalyptic foreboding (good luck topping the awesomely silly gravitas of the OVA's Engrish opening monologue -- will the people of this version be 'forced to subsist in a barren, bastille environment'? So. Awfully. Good.). That said, I'm also a big fan of Takanashi, whose work spans anything from the melancholy of 'Sadness and Sorrow' from Naruto to, well, all the sunshine and bop in Heartcatch Precure!, so I'm fairly confident he'll do that scene justice.

As predicted, Sugita's hamming it up like a champ.

Definitely not sold on the DarShu voice, which at times leans too much into screeching where perhaps growling would be more appropriate (a sentiment I share with my metal tastes, perhaps coincidentally), but eh, it is what it is.

My only real complaint from what we've seen is that Arshes occasionally looks less emotionally invested than what we saw in the OVA. A few of the shots from that trailer look a wee bit generic to me, but admittedly -- that's just a few shots.

There's no way I won't be watching, but I'm definitely tempering my expectations. I did the same for Record of Ragnarok (which I've not read) and genuinely enjoyed it despite the weak animation for the god-level seiyuu performances and the crazy Fate-like matchups -- as big a fan as I am of Miki Shinichirou, I definitely prefer RoR's depiction of Kojirou as a loser who made being famous for losing to the absolute best his strength rather than Fate's...rather unkind treatment of the runner-up of Ganryu (and subsequent utter worship of Musashi). So despite all of the crap RoR received, if I could glean some fun from that, I'm sure I'll find something in Bastard!! 2.0 to love.

Side point: I couldn't care less about the spell names. I've seen fan subs, official subs, and scanlations of Bastard!! over the years...they're all just interpretations of Hagiwara's completely unsubtle and yet unhinged homages. Same as Araki's JoJo Bizarre Adventure really -- we know what they mean either way, and it can be fun seeing the legally-necessary wordplay. That and Netflix subs are already at the lower end of official local subtitling for me. If we put, say, Nozomi or HiDive/Sentai near the top in terms of quality and dedication (the latter has been known to update their subtitles after a home release [see Revue Starlight broadcast vs BD upload]), Crunchyroll somewhere in the middle, and Amazon waaaay down in the dumps, Netflix sits between CR and Amazon, usually a mix of dubtitles and closed captioning. I found their Saiki K. unwatchable, but that show is I think second only to Zetsubou-sensei when it comes to very critical translation (and the aforementioned Nozomi *created an entire liner note book over 300 pages long just for Zetsubou season 1*). Fate/Apocrypha was okay even if they got the name of a very significant noble phantasm wrong (and for some reason Aniplex didn't correct it for the blurays). MOST Netflix anime is perfectly watchable if rarely awesome in its subtitling. The fact that they encourage you to skip the opening songs goes nicely with the fact that they almost never subtitle them I suppose.

So if they get the spell/locale names 'right', cool. If not, it won't really affect what we're listening to. Metallicana/Meta-Ricarna, Anthrathrax/Anslasax, Guns 'n' Roses/Guns 'n' Row...close enough. Actually, I'm more than a little fond of that last one. It's like, who do you think you are you kidding!? <3
