The thing that impressed me about this show is that it didn't pull any quick shortcuts, even though it glossed over things it did at least make it clear enough that Minato had to do a lot of physio between coming out of his coma and leaving hospital (on a crutch), and a lot more physio and studying to get into high school on his own two feet.

Seen far too many shows (not just anime even) where someone wakes from a coma and runs around like nothing had happened, so that was a nice bit of reality.

Then it hasn't pulled any 'magical memory recovery' trick or some 'muscle memory' stunt to make him become good as soon as he got into a pool. And it showed that his past success wasn't because he wasn't some kind of wild prodigy, he just put a lot of bloody hard work into it!

I think that's just grounded the show in a way many sports shows don't.

I've only watched two episodes and was happy about how much I enjoyed them...y'know aside from the obvious reasons... Wink

Of course everyone is going to compare this to Free! but I actually feel this is a better show because of the emotional weight. They could have piggy-backed on the popularity of Free! and just focused on fanservice and lolz but they didn't.

The writers put effort into this one. Gasp. Cool

I skipped over most of the article as I haven't had the chance to catch up past the first episode, but I'm surprised at how well recieved this show has been. I assumed most people's reactions would be "fujobait garbage, pass" but even my friend who I was sure wouldn't like it is even more caught up than me lol. The amnesia plot is what really draws me in since it sets it apart from other team sports anime by having more than just character interactions as a draw.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this show so much because I wasn't all that impressed with Masafumi Nishida's writing on Tiger & Bunny, but it turns out the guy is not only a great writer, but also a pretty good director. My one knock against RE-MAIN is that I wish it weren't just 12 episodes long. Given how ruthlessly realistic the show has been about how hard it is to become good at water polo, I really can't see how the main characters will convincingly develop into a competitive team in the 6 episodes we have left.

Even if both feature highschool boys in speedos, I'm enjoying Re-Main a lot more than I did Free!, which I slept through during most of its run despite the gorgeous Kyoani animation and "loud" bombastic feel of the latter. I generally shy away from sports-themed anime as I usually do not find them enjoyable, but if this doesn't pull a Stars Align on me, I might count it among my sparsely populated recommend-worthy sports club-themed anime list, which isn't much of a list considering only three shows are in it (Run With The Wind, Tsurune, and classic Slam Dunk)
