When talking about the endings to Evangelion, people tend to overlook the original manga adaptation by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Essentially it's an adaptation of EoE, but significantly better in my mind, and brings an invaluable perspective to the discussion.

The first part of the TV series was fun to watch. The rest is is just someone abusing drugs while writing the script. The latest movies are barely better.

Yeah, similar to Anno's Shinji, Sadamoto's Shinji is a character the writer related to the point the manga ending was based on Sadamoto's growth when he was a student. Still, it kinda leaves a sad impression on Anno considering it reveals that the poor guy went through depression and that's horrible. Rebuild Shinji is also closer to anime Shinji since it was written by Anno too but a far more optimistic look at life.

Sadamoto's "original manga" came out almost a decade after the series, and the final volumes were coming out alongside the first Rebuild movies.

That's not exactly true. It started around the same time as the anime (may have even technically been before) but did not finish until way later. It's also probably the best version of Eva to be honest....

EDIT: MAL has Eva manga starting in December 1994 which would be almost a year before the anime started

I apologize for relying on my memory, which was dominated by the long wait for the final half of the manga series.

amazon.co.jp[1] lists publication dates for the manga in tankubon form, which followed any serialization in magazines by a few months:

v1: Aug 1995
v2: Mar 1995 (TV series Oct 1995-Mar 1996)
v3: Oct 1996
v4: Oct 1997 (End of Evangelion Jul 1997)
v5: Dec 1999
v6: Dec 2000
v7: Nov 2001
v8: Dec 2002
v9: Apr 2004
v10: Mar 2006
v11: Jun 2007 (Rebuild 1.0, Rebuild 2.0 in 2009)
v12: Mar 2010
v13: Nov 2012 (Rebuild 3.0)
v14: Nov 2014

So.... only the first couple of volumes of manga preceded the anime, and the vast bulk of the manga followed the End of Evangelion and the fan-reaction to it. But "a decade after" was definitely off-the-mark.

Lynzee, Jacki, James --- I really enjoyed your conversation about Eva and the Rebuild films immensely --- particularly the insight into why the last one is called "3 + 1" instead of "4", and why it might be called "Thrice upon a time". I'm sure your discussion will illuminate my next viewing of Thrice upon a time.

(Re: "Kimochi warui" at the end of End of Evangelion: Fan legend[1] has it that Yuko Miyamura, Asuka's voice actress, rejected the line Anno wrote for Asuka, and he let her substitute her own --- "Kimochi warui". If I may be irreverent, that line was changed forever for me when I heard her say the same thing in her role in Hyper Police (released about the same time as End of Eva), only then her character was complaining of a hangover. It amuses me to think of End of Evangelion as a chronicle of a bender.

ETA:
[1] Better than legend, I guess --- I finally verified it with the published storyboards (despite this being one of the reasons I sought out the storyboards for this film many years ago).

The storyboard for that scene has Asuka saying (to the extent that I can read Anno's handwriting): "Anta nanka ni korosareru no wa mappira yo" --- something like, "There's no way I'd be killed by the likes of you".

Whether the line was changed through Yuko Miyamura's intervention or for some other reason, I don't know.
