This Week In Anime has been crucial reading since it started as a feature, and never more so than this week. Thanks, y'all.

The volume of the manga that is out in English is great. I haven't been watching much anime lately, but this one is definitely on the queue to get to.

I was super excited for this series because I've a big fan of Sherlock Holmes but I've been a bit disappointed because to me, Moriarty doesn't really give the same feeling as he did in other adaptations. I think I might enjoy this more as it goes on and I view it on its one merits more.

One thing I have liked so far is that Moriarty and Co. are never the instigators. So far, they have only targeted nobles that have been proven to be deserving their fate beforehand. I had originally found this anime to be a mix of Black Butler and Hell Girl, and while I still stand by that, I think it might be more appropriate to think of this show as an alternate reality Columbo. Both go after the deeds of deserving nobility/upper-class, just with one focusing on justice within the law, while the other focuses on revenge and street justice.

What I read of the manga is a fun time. Haven't checked out the anime yet, but now looking forward to it.

It annoys me to an absolutely unreasonable degree that the title in that second-to-last screenshot is "crime consultant" and not "consulting criminal."

Just gotta hold out hope there. But those hopes are certainly buoyed by the consistency of its surprisingly savvy political messaging. I even mentioned in our Most Anticipated column that, while optimistic, I couldn't help but also imagine the myriad ways this show could fumble its aspirations. However, instead it's been pretty methodical about dissolving those worries. Like, my biggest worry was the potentially muddled message of a "good" nobleman punishing the "bad" ones. Because, spoilers: all nobility is bad

Sure, just because someone has more money and/or a higher standing in society than others, that means they're bad, because that isn't horribly discriminatory AT ALL.

I never read the original manga source material and I'm still enjoying the series but I guess I was hoping for something more like Death Note but with Sherlock Holmes characters. Instead they seem to be going with a more formulaic revenge of the week plot type of show which isn't bad but I was hoping for a more of a cat and mouse type of element to it. And it's a bit hard for me to accept no one has been suspicious of Moriarty yet.

Did we watch the same show? Laughing Two episodes in and he's already killing people for petty and personal reason. His morality took a huge dive from "killing a child killer who the system couldn't touch" to "killed a family because they thought commoners were icky"

Guys a genuine psychopath. He went mask off sooner than Light Yagami did

Isn't Moriarty more of an anti-villain than anti-hero? I'm just asking because Sherlock Holmes is the hero of this franchise while technically would be the antagonist of this (I'm stating that antagonist =//= villain)

I mean the family didn't kill anyone but they were abusive(at least the mother, son, butler were. Moriarty Sr.'s crime was mostly apathy). Does abuse deserve death? Probably not in many cases in real life but most catharsis in fiction =/= reality.

"surprisingly savvy political messaging"

Really? I see it as remarkably ham-handed. Rich-villain-of-the-week stories get tiresomely repetitive, and we have yet to see any situation where the morality of killing the perpetrator is less obvious. Will there be an episode where the brothers feel regret for their crimes?

Nothing wrong with revenge fantasies, but it does tend to be quite telling if a person is particularly choosy about which revenge fantasy they partake in. Seeing people who dismissed Shield Hero as a morally bankrupt revenge fantasy story openly cheer for the killing of innocent people in this just because they're rich, for example. Well, that's a bit telling I think. And they kinda lose any kind of morality high guard they may have asserted they had in disliking other revenge fantasy stories when it's suddenly something they themselves agree on that makes it okay. But media is up to interpretation, I guess. I mean, I remember seeing people walk away from Parasite thinking the Kim's were the "good guys" of that story as well.

How wild! It's almost like the motives and reasons behind things matter! What a crazy idea that narratives change depending on their subject! Did you know that shows with robots have different messages and that not everyone likes all of them just because they have robots?

Listen, I don't want to jump on your back here but you absolutely MUST be joking or either wildly misunderstood the film. The Kims absolutely are framed as the heroes, intentionally, in the film.

The entire movie is a black comedy highlighting the disparities between class. But I refuse to believe you watched the movie and didn't know that. Like, with as much incredulity I can muster, please just admit that your entire post is just a troll to poke at leftist commentators. I might respect that more.
