I wonder if it’s because of just how bad the animation is. I mean, I wasn’t expecting anything too high quality, but even from the get go, it was kind of painful to watch.

Which is really odd considering the series is made by two decent studios. You can dislike them for any reasons but they never faced production issues before.

Most probably either the project was taken last minbute or produccers do not care that much for it.

I'm surprised but not shocked. P.A. Work is a small studio, but has many projects at moment. So I wonder how they would manage schedule; my guess would be, not well.

I do not recall Glasslip having production issues. Glasslip problem was too showy trying to be KyoAni style, story rather conclusion sucked because too much focus on animation, not much on script.

The only concurring project they have aside from this one is Shirobako movie.

Is it Hatena Illusion-tier bad? At least I can see how badly animated Hatena Illusion is from the few screencaps and webms posted on /a/. OTOH, no one literally talks about this show on either /a/ or reddit so I'm not aware how bad the visuals for this show is.

They have an original anime called Appare-Ranman this Spring.

So that show is in Spring, huh? I'm not aware.

Anyways, I'm not sure how heavy the Shirobako movie is but it's not really unusual for a studio to have shows lined up on consecutive seasons. Seems to me that A3 was just chipped in during the last minute.

I’ve never seen HI, but even from the start, if the character was up close and front and center it looked okay, but when it was a wider shot everything else was off model. Badly drawn backgrounds and faces, odd movements, etc. Even the character designs, while again are not bad, are also not great.

It makes me sad because I love the game and the voice actors are doing a great job, but the animation is just sad and disappointing.

I presumed the same thing. Also, A3 is anounced as a split-core with part two planned for summer.

P.A. Works is not that small of a studio actually. Sometime ago their head mentioned that while in past they can only manage one project at once, they have enough staff to work on two consecurively now. And 3Hz unlike Actas are ptretty consistent with production.

So the msot plausible explanation is that this project was indeed a last minute decision so they hired two studios who were alreadyy booked but agreed to spare some staff for it. But they overestinmated themselves.

It is likely an issue with the production management getting in over their head. Basically, something went wrong in the production workflow that steadily caused a decrease in quality and timeliness of the animation components. I’m guessing there may even have been a problem that pushed back the beginning of production. From a software development stand point, this is a series that exhibits the hallmarks of a “Death March” production. Unlike in software development, the deadlines are real for broadcast.

I can’t remember the name of the show, but a similar incident happened at Hoods Entertainment. One of the staff went off the record to basically highlight the negligence of the production management. It was fascinating in how indifference and incompetence among management can work in tandem to undermine a production workflow from the start. In the case of this production, I bet something similar happened.

Edit: Found the discussion of that show here.

That would certainly explain why A-1 got an episode during this batch, though they still have other shows in the pipeline too, so it's odd seeing them here too.
